While I can identify some pipe styles. I still can't tell a lot of them apart.

I cheat and use a pipe shapes chart! I’ve looked at it enough that I can recognize a lot but there’s always in between’s and different interpretations. I’ve got a couple that don’t really fit the technical description of what the shape is supposed to be but since that’s what the carver called it that’s good enough for me.
