  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

When did the cigar fad start? When did it end?

I smoked very infrequently from about 1987 until a couple of years ago. Now, I smoke far more frequently (probably 5 per week... sometimes more, sometimes less). I remember during the Bill Clinton thing, when he used Monica as a human humidor, someone in the media commented "At least this might put an end to that idiotic cigar fad".

I was just curious as to when you fellas thought the cigar fad began and ended.

Thanks

For me it has been just over a year. I don't smoke as often as I would like but I do enjoy a stick from time to time.

I would say the cigar boom started around 90 or 91 and ended in 1998.

I think Mustard has it pretty well timed, I might say 98/2000 it was winding down. Used to love the yuppies smoking crap and paying 5x to much for that crap. Guys would smoke 5 out of their first box and become experts literally overnight.

Working at a cigar shop, those guys would be my dream customers!!! As long as they didn't hang out in the lounge!

Too bad I am a little too young for the boom. I think I really would have enjoyed it! I turned 18 and within a year or two there were all these stupid anti-smoking laws.

The cool thing is if you are watching the numbers smoking seems to be rising. Could there be another "boom" in the future? I thank the boom because my friend's dad got into cigars due to the boom, I'm pretty sure at least, and my buddy was allowed cigars at 14 believe it or not. He would share with me and I loved them. As soon as I was able to buy I had a 50ct humidor and a box of NC Partagas on the way. Now I'm 24 and have a respectable stock of treats. Thank you boom!

I think we are seeing a nice upswing but the difference is the quality. There was so much junk out there during the boom it was hard to find quality smokes when trying new stuff. Today, I am finding more and more very good stuff thanks to Pepin, Rocky, CAO and Perdomo.

I think that I have read that several years in this decade have had import levels of cigars that surpassed all but the biggest years of the cigar boom. If anything, it is still going on and the difference is in the last decade or so supply has managed to more or less catch up with demand.
