I don't think anyone can claim one pistol is not intended for CCW. I have friends that carry full size XDM 40's all day every day. Thats a fairly large pistol IMO.
I carry a S&W M&P 9c daily IWB w/a Comp-tac Minotaur holster with a Comp-Tac gun belt. Feels fine and no problems at all. A good holster and good belt equalize the game.

Ive concealed MP5K's before... as well as SBS and SBR's (although they were off body carry concealed)... and used to carry a govt model (full size) 1911 as my "duty" weapon at one time..

Its not that larger sized weapons cant be concealed.. they absolutely can.. its relatively easy for someone thats built like sasquatch (me) if you know what you are doing and have the right wardrobe to support it..

but...

for a 9mm.. or even the .40 variant (beretta 96), the weapon is considerably larger (in width, length, and height) than other pistols of equal or better reliability, functionality, and overall performance... which makes concealment more of a challenge.. and the pistol less desirable if CCW is the primary purpose for purchasing it..

overall length is the easiest thing to overcome... width and height however can be a serious problem for many people.. especially for women, smaller framed men, and/or skinny people).. good belt and holster or not, unless you are willing to build your wardrobe completely around your pistol, a 92F is going to present challenges for the typical 5'11", 165lb amercian male that another full sized pistol like a G17 or a 1911 (and many other pistols) will not..

again.. this can be overcome.. but it is something that should be recognized on the front end.. not on the back end, after you have spent $1000 on your new pistol, holster, gun belt, and spare mags, etc...

not banging on the 92F... Ive carried an M9 (army designation for the pistol) for a living.. and carried a 96D for a short while when it was the issued pistol at an agency I worked for several years ago... they are fine weapons... they are reliable, reasonably easy to maintain, accurate, etc.. and there is plenty of support for the platform available (every major leather and kydex maker int he US supports it, easy to get factory and aftermarket mags, etc..etc..)...

but they simply do not lend themselves well to CCW for most people... and are not even close to being a top 5 choice for anyone that has any serious amount of training or experience with firearms..

Another vote for Glocks. Nothing wrong with the Beretta, but Glocks take a licking and keep on ticking. Drop it in the mud, drive over it with a car, soak it in water (the Philadelphia PD did all of those before choosing Glocks) and it will still keep on shooting. JMO, YMMV.

I appreciate all of the input so far. I will take a look at the H&K today. I was leaning towards the Glock to begin with and after listening to the guy at the gun counter and reading here I will probably go that way.

What are some recommendations on holsters?
Depends on what kind of holster you're looking for.
But, to cover all the bases... I'd recommend Dark Star Gear. Tom makes some awesome stuff, and the strong side holsters can be converted between OWB and IWB.

My duty weapon is a glock 22, thousands of rounds without a single problem. i dont like the 92's fat ass grip.

Granted, my conceal is this puppy:

I run a crossbreed IWB, and a leather owb highrise for when i can drape a shirt over it.

Picked up the Gen4 Glock 19 along with a ETW holster. They both feel good in hand and on my waist. Hoping to hit the range tomorrow.

For sure. I looked at the ETW and the Galco both really close but with the ETW being made in NC so close to home AND being a whole lot less $$$ I went with the ETW.

Made in NC? Where at? I'm up in that area, and wouldn't mind a new holster...

Also, welcome to the Glock Family ( = I really enjoy mine, though now we are in the market for a subcompact .40 single stack. She can't get her hand around the grip on the 22, and I'd like something around that she can comfortably hold.

PPS and Shield are both good to go.
They come in .40, and also the superior 9mm :p

PPS is what I'm looking for, if I can just find one. Sorry, didn't mean to threadjack.

Haven't shot a PPS (I despise anything Walther since my first P99 .40) but I do own a Shield in 9mm (with Apex trigger) and it's absolutely brilliant. I can't recommend the .40 S&W as it was made by lawyers and accountants at the FBI so they could pass department qualifications and it's only 1 of 2 calibers ever to be made less capable than it's predecessor. Even if I did like the .40 the Shield is far too small of a platform for that caliber (IMHO anything in .40 smaller than a Glock 23 or equivalent is too small). Any benefit you'll get from the increase in lead size will be offset by how many time you can actually hit your intended target and it's also not worth the loss in capacity. Again these are simply my thoughts and YMMV.

Yep. .40 is cool for shooting through windshields... and nothing else. In my obviously biased opinion.

You really need to check out Walter again though. The PPQ is easily one of the best polymer guns put out in the last decade. If not THE best.

I'll see if I can rent one next time i'm at the range in Manchester, NH. Looks kinda like a S&W Sigma to me though from the google pics? Although I would rather take a 9mm 147gr any day over a .40 S&W I've owned quite a few .40's and I just can't love them. Extra recoil, reduced capacity and marginal ballistic gain over a good 9mm depending on who's testing you believe. I guess there's a reason all the PD's around these parts are moving back to the .45 ACP from the .40 S&W. A lot of departments here are Glock 21's or S&W 45's including the Mass State Police who last year traded in all their Sig .40's for the old proven .45 ACP. I thank god that our PD moved away from the Beretta 92FS a few years ago and now issue Glock 21's. I personally would have been happier with the Glock 31 and the .357SIG but .45 is fine by me.
