This sounds sweet. If we are going MM I would be so down but briar I don't think I have that budget either. Let's keep updates going on this and ideas. I have already subscribed for this thread lol.

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...
Maybe there needs to be two versions, a BOTL cob and a 10th Anniversary BOTL briar... I'll be in for whatever the brothers decide, but I'd prefer buying something nicer that I'm going to cherish and want to show off. If I put away $20-30/month, $200 gets built up rather quickly. Most people spend 3x that a month on a fancy cell phone plan and have nothing of value to show for it. Just my $0.02

just to chime in, yes, my "botl briar" is the nording valhalla 500whatever (can't recall right now) that was dropped into my lap as part of BBE IX. it was from the board, but not in any official way, per se. an amazing pipe in it's own right, but all the more cool because of how i got it, y'know?

no, we have never, as far as i have seen, had a group buy on a briar. this seems to be the most active the pipe section has ever been on the site, so it would be a first.

yes, eric is gonna be the final arbiter if his intelectual property gets used for this. not that it would be a big issue, but i wouldn't want to put a big "BotL" imprint on it without his blessing.

and, yes, i would most assuredly be down for this. o)

so, anyone have any first hand experience in one of these types of group buys?

Here is what we did on a MM cob

Why don't we ask E if we can first use BOTL then do a poll on cob or briar then see how many will commit. I can do the info on the cobs but I don't know anyone that would do a briar. Unless..............

*update* - I've already opened a dialog with Eric around this. I've also started talking with a pipe maker who has done work with JD.

I can't say too much yet, but I think if all the cards fall right we could end up with a very nice custom briar pipe in the $200-$250 range.

Hope to have more information soon.

awesome, thanks for the leg work, man!

also, to chime in on my view on this: while a cob is cool, it just doesn't have the emotional gravity that a briar does. if its from BotL, it's gotta COUNT. and i get the guys who think $250 is steep, as that is currently more than any two of my briars together. BUT, two bills for something i will treasure for a lifetime, versus what i have dropped on a box of sticks that last max 75hrs (at 3hr burn time, 25ct box), helps to put things into perspective. AND we have time to plan. trim the stogie budget slightly, skip lunch out a couple times, the money can be saved pretty easily if the time frame is right.

also, jfire brought up a damn good point, that there might be more buyers than we have active pipers. there might be others in on this, just to pick up another little piece of their home on the webz, y'know?

Other possible makers: Tinsky, Hackert, or Mark Balkovec...if the JD guy can't do it. I know Tinsky did the 2013 pipes for the Badger & Blade forum.

I know the guy that runs the pipe collector's forum where he specializes in indie pipe maker, we could reach out to him because he has a lot of contacts to different small run pipe makers. His custom made pipes that he just did ran in the same price.

just to put this out there, as i have several so far (zulu, billiard, and bulldog), and they are superlative performers, and nice lookers as well:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCsQFjAA&url=http://www.ebay.com/bhp/alexander-briar-pipe&ei=XbjNUo6NNOHhygGO4YHYCQ&usg=AFQjCNHZAtIgINa61VzaLkHi2NwW7kHAxA&cad=rja

old man zavvos does decent work, his "non-prime" briar has flaws so small as to be unnoticable, and his higher end is awfully pretty grain. i know BST/sasquatch has purchased briar raw from him a few times, and speaks highly about it's source. this would keep us in a briar pipe, and possibly comfortably under a hundo each even if we request a smooth finish, higher-grade piece.

thoughts?
