Although you asked whiskey or yac, based on your post Id also say try rum. I was pleasantly surprised the same way when I went with appleton rum and I think a viaje or something. Couldn't believe how good the pairing was and I am a bourbon man as well. Sticking with congac tho the suggestions already made are great I wouldn't go lower than a vsop as vs can be a bit harsh.

Basically any brown liquor goes good with cigars....well maybe not tequila. Bourbon, rum, and cognac are my favorites...in that order.

A GOOD reposado actually pairs quite well
