It seems that this occasional social endeavor into cigars has become more of love and habit. The old matches aren't as easy to use now. Any suggestions on a lighter that isn't going to break the bank or cut too deeply into the cigar budget? $20-30 range or am I going to just get crap at that price?

+1 and invest in a Xikar lighter. Their customer service from what I've seen here is top notch should Godforbid something happens to your lighter down the road.
Have had several and all have broken. If I didn't have other backups, i would be lighterless until replacement. If you're only getting one, it's not worth it for me.

I've had that lighter and have smoked easily 100s of cigars without refilling.

If you're not worried about size (it fits in pocket btw) I think it's fantastic.

Good to know. Every other lighter I have purchased suck! They run out the same day I refill them. :/
Most lighter issues happen because of improper technique when recharging.....google "how to refill lighters" and you'll see the right technique to use. It takes awhile to learn it right but once you do...you won't have many problems afterwards. Took me a half hour one day with a POS lighter that always seemed not to work...but I practiced on it and now it's a great lighter. The important part is to PURGE the tank completely....purge until the lighter no longer hisses as this tells you that all of the air inside is no longer there to interfere with it lighting when the spark is there. If the lighter has no spark you won't be able to light it with a welding rod. Put your lighter on a flat surface and then put the can of butane at a 90 degree angle and push down in one motion and ensure that you don't bend the nozzle...if you do it will spray butane and you've just put more air into the chamber....this is why most lighters will not light correctly afterwards...air and butane do not make a lighter work very well....it has to be ALL butane. It takes practice to do it correctly and some lighters need a different nozzle...they are not all universal lighters that take one nozzle. Have fun practicing....if you hear the hiss....you need to purge that out and start over again.

Xikar most consistent quality of all lighters I reviewed. Warranty is untouchable by other brands.
