A few days ago I sorted out my leaves : small - big - damaged
Now that all my tobacco is at the same humidity I found out that some ligero leaves which are blackish (over fermented) stay crisp.
When you bunch them i'm sure they will crack from the binder pressure.
I'm think that they are also responsible for the bad ash forming so i tossed them away.
I tried to make a puro of it but it's hard because the condition of the leave. It had a bad, sour acid taste.

That is the coolest room ever! Is it in an interior room of the house? Or outside?

I'll receive this week my first shipment of Honduran tobacco (+/- 80lbs)
I had to remove all the shelves of cedar wood. They were not dry when I installed and although the smell was nice it gave an unpleasant taste on my tobacco.
In have them out for several weeks and after a few days in the sun they smell very sweet - vanilla.
Exited to put them back.
The wrapper is not 100% fermented. I checked with some farms and it never is.
It is the cigar producer who does the final fermentation.
So I'm tuning my old tobacco storage box into a fermenter.
Here is a picture of some shelves drying.

First shipment arrived ! Hands of wrapper below, filler on top.
Indeed, there is slight faint of raisins smell with the rappers, especially with the ligero.
Next holiday, I'll ferment it more !!
I was thinking that you go twice as fast in a fermenting chamber then with pillones.
It is mostly the inner part that gets decent fermenting.
I ordered a temperature controller and a heating pad that can be moistened.
Sunday I travel to Estelli to buy a few hundred pounds. They will tell me nothing on the phone what is available.
I know they have also farms in Ecuador, so I hope to buy also Ecuadorian wrapper !

When you purchase tobacco from the farm, is there a minimum quantity you have to purchase? is it 100 LBS? 500 LBS? and is the leaf packaged in hands of a dozen leaves like for the drying barn, before being baled?

Most sell only by bale, around 110 lbs for filler.
The binder and wrapper come in hands.
I'm just back from a trip to Esteli, Nicaragua and it is harder to get tobacco there.
All the the companies are in a "free tax zone" and you need special licences so they can export.
I'm now looking into that.

Finally today arrived my second purchase of tobacco !
It took five weeks to finish the deal.
It is a bit over 300 lbs, all from Nicaragua !
It took so long that I'm back at work, so I'll have to wait 5 more weeks to have a look at it.
This tobacco will age for at least 2 year in my bodega at 17° C and 68% humidity.

Did again some trials now with the insulation installed.
Before I had a heat up time of 2 hours, now 30 min !
And only 2 degrees of variation between top and bottom.
I'll install one more thermometer/hygrometer to complete the frementation box.
Unfortunately I have no more time to start a fermentation. Will do this when I return from work end of February.

Installed the AC in the bodega and did a test run. I was surprised about the strong tobacco smell at the AC outlet so I stopped it.
Having this for 2 years will not benefit my tobacco. The tobacco was just piled on the shelves.
So I start storing it in carton boxes. By doing this I can store even more tobacco.
Filled already 20 boxes but will need 20 more.
Later on I'll install cold insulation panels to reduce the electricity bill but have problem finding them down here.

Man, I hope you have very good security. Would suck to get all that stuff stolen after all your expense and hard work.
