Hi all,
My Cigar habit is pretty new (really just got into it in 10/19). I went from smoking mostly mild/medium Dominican's, to mostly CC's by 11/19, and now I smoke a mix of stronger Nicaraguan's (35%), strong Dominican's (25%) and still probably a little more CC's (40%). Most days I have 3, some days up to 5 or as few as 2. I've been doing this for 5 months now.

I've noticed that my taste buds and/or olfactory senses seem to be getting numb much more often. To address this in another forum it was mentioned to use a nasal rinse (like neti pot). This helped but doesn't alleviate the problem entirely. I recently had a head cold which made things much worse.

I was curious if any other members have maintained a smoking habit of 3 or more a day for any long period of time successfully and if so, do you run into issues with taste/smell or is it just me? Any tips appreciated. I'm starting to think I may need to taper back to fully enjoy my smokes but I don't want to if I don't have to.

I've been smoking around five cigars a day for the last five years.
As far as any negative effects go, they've been very minimal.
My teeth are probably the worst. My dentist said the only way to prevent the staining would be to rinse with mouthwash after every cigar, which is impractical and expensive. I just deal with it, and take as good care of my teeth as I possibly can. My dental hygienist was very impressed that there wasn't any damage or decay under all the stains the last time I had a cleaning, but they did have to use a sandblaster to get them off.
My lungs are fine, enough so that I regularly run 5Ks with no wheezing or coughing.
I haven't had a blood pressure reading in a long time, but last time I went all was normal. Although my heart has been feeling like it's working a little extra hard lately, but I've made other choices I'd blame for that before the cigars.
My taste buds have been perfectly fine, until I added ~3-4 pipes per day to my routine. Still learning how to mitigate tongue burn, but I have to watch the spicy foods until I get better at smoking a pipe.
I've always said that I have an elastic palate though, no matter what I do my palate bounces back to neutral incredibly easily.

It's definitely good to know that more can be smoked for longer thanks @jj16361
I really haven seen any other issues (I have increased the mouthwash) but still playing tennis 5 times a week with no adverse affects unless I smoke some type of bomb right before then I'm a little groggy and lazy, lol

I try to keep it to 6 a week, sometimes I double up and when I get a chance to Herf no telling how many cigars I'll smoke. You can be aware of the type of toothpaste you are using. Sodium Laurel Sulfate is a popular ingredient in toothpaste that will kill your palate. I've taken to using a simple baking soda and coconut oil mix to brush my teeth and rinse my mouth.

3 cigars a day can be quite a bit of nicotine but if you aren't having any side affects then..........

You may try starting with the milder cigars and working your way up to the full, dense maduros. Are you eating and drinking while and after smoking, a palate cleanser is always a good idea to reset the taste buds.

Just use bourbon as a palate cleanser.
I would try this but I don't drink ;)

its a hobby, not a habit
with that said, i keep it at 5 cigars a week max.
As an ex cigarette smoker it's probably both for me

I can't go back to mild/medium, I still have quite a few left from October but I rarely smoke them now.
Generally I will smoke after I eat, or between meals and in the evening. I don't seem to like to eat or drink anything while smoking.
To note that during my recent head cold only my stronger Nicaraguan cigars still tasted good to me, so 1st mild/medium cigars taste like air, then CC's start to loose their flavor, but the stronger Nica's always taste like something.

everyone..........

you will find that cigars are no longer special to you,and the thrill of a good stick has diminished to a mere habit.

Plan your sticks so that you derive more satisfaction, and do so less often.

You will also save $$ you can put toward better stock.

I found that I could not appreciate the subtle character of a CC while I was burning a Nica Bomb every other cigar.

you can let your palate relax for a couple of days, and then light up a CC and be amazed at the flavors you were overlooking.

thus endeth the lesson.............:chicken::cat::happy:

Thanks! This is what I figured, but I was hoping for a more desirable solution, less cigars is not at all desirable ;)

I might have a 3 cigar day once a week, twice a week here and there. I have more wrinkles now, but I'm older. Teeth aren't pearly white, but I'm not sure they were before cigars either. Still work out 5-6 days a week, though unfortunately competitive hockey is done since my surgery last year. So lots of issues, but they might be more due to aging than to the cigars.

Couldn't agree more rather have 1 superb stick than a handful of good ones.

I’m sure I would. On a week where I may just smoke 3 days in a row I can feel my wind is compromised. I’m active at work and not at work and I feel the effects immediately. Can’t imagine what my palate would be like at that point either.

I smoke one per day. I'm going to take a break soon because cigars don't taste the same lately. Can't imagine smoking multiple per day like Saka.

Had 3 today myself and was thinking just that.. am I truly enjoying the experience? Or are my old nicotine habits kicking in. It’s hard when you have an overflowing humidor and a ton of time due to social distancing.. hmm

I hear that, I've been up to 4-5 a day now, working from home.

I've found a few things to help out the burnout situation (many from this thread) like...
smoking lighter cigars in the morning
cutting out the retrohale on every puff
rinsing sinuses daily with the neti kit,
extra brushing/mouthwashing after every gar

While I'm not at 100% I do get to enjoy the majority of the 4-5 smokes a day so far.....

Good point about rinsing the sinuses, did not think about that!

Anywhere from 4-10 smokes a day for me. Pipes included. Higher days I'm smoking pipe in my work truck all day long. I haven't had any issues yet other than tongue bite occasionally from the pipe.
