All,

I shipped some cigars via UPS (have done this before, no problem). Full disclosure, I think I omitted the house number on the delivery address. That said, there was never an alert that said there was an issue with the address, etc. UPS says they delivered it to the front door, but I don't know how they could have done that? Of course, the person on the other end now says that they cannot find the shipment/it was not delivered.

Can I even submit a claim on this due to them being cigars? Do I have much option other than chalk it up to bad luck? Curious on what I can do here since I was sending "contraband"?

Thanks in advance guys.

You could certainly try fudging the contents of the box to see if you can at least get UPS minimum default insurance. I've never had any luck getting reimbursed by the postal service for lost boxes, not sure if UPS is the same, Paul.

I actually have had luck in filing a claim on some damaged cigars, in the past. It was a 5er I sold 3 or 4 years ago. They requested proof of value, which wasn't easy because the cigars were no longer produced. I literally sent them a picture of my post listing them for sale on FB and they approved it. Granted it was only around $80, but they covered it.

Yeah, and due to this being my screw up, I'm not very confident but who knows!

Ask them for proof of delivery. The UPS driver should be getting a signature and even if the delivered it to the wrong address there should be a record of where it was delivered to. Unlike the postal service, UPS is more accustomed to delivering to businesses and this is standard practice. We run into this situation from time to time at work and getting proof of delivery almost always resolves the issue.

Appreciate this. I just saw today that they delivered it to a completely incorrect house, and I'm not sure why they would do that if there wasn't a house number on the shipment (again, completely my fault, I just thought they'd maybe say hey something is wrong here, but I don't do a lot of shipping). Rupe, do you think it's an issue if I just flat out say that there were cigars in there? I want to file a a claim but also don't want to lie! Lol.

Since UPS requires a license to ship tobacco, I think you may be SOL. see UPS: Shipping Tobacco - United States

My suggestion would be to either see if you can track down the person who actually got it (by using the address it was delivered to) or ask the person you sent it to to contact them since it may be someone in their neighborhood. If that doesn't work and you do not feel comfortable lying to UPS (or being vague about the contents) then you may be screwed. Good luck regardless.

Shipped to an address other than was on the box, as you said there was no house number yet they delivered it, request they pick up the package, technically they delivered to the wrong address and believe it or not they are responsible for it. When they deliver to wrong addressed they will at least make an attempt to retrieve the package.
