Ok, let me preface this by saying that this sounds like and probably is a newb question, but my previous theory seems incorrect and I'm sure others have the same question.

Why is it that some smokes develop that Nasty Ass tar that seeps through the mouth of the cigar? I can't stand that and it ruins a smoke! I used to think it was because when you were smoking, you were pulling to hard and that drew the tar out, but my most recent experience proved that wrong. The cap was sufficiently cut, so the air flow wasn't restricted??

On another note, the smoke that this occured with was the robusto size of the San Cristobal line. This is my second try with this line and the first time I wasn't impressed and now this, so I may give up on em. When I first started smoking, I would buy the Cuesta Reys and this issue (besides taste) made me stop buying them.

Thanks gang!

Can't say I've ever noticed a "Nasty Ass" tar, or any tar for that matter.

I am a bit of a drooler, though, so maybe I just dilute it with my Nasty Ass slobber.

There is a bit of science to smoking a cigar. In some ways its like a distiller, different parts of what is in the cigar are released at different temperatures so there is some truth that smoking a cigar too fast will release some of the worst parts of the cigar. Now just because you release them dosn't mean you'll taste them, some will cool on the way to your mouth and redeposit in the cigar. So, one of the ill effects of smoking a cigar hot is that you not only releae more tar, but start to saturate the cigar with it as well.

What happens when a cigar gets bitter at the end is two things, one is the nasty stuff dosn't have time to redeposit in the cigar before it gets to your taste buds and two if you've built up some of that nasty stuff your in for a real nasty finish.

Some things to know: with age, tobacco leaf retains much of the good tasting oils, but things like tar, amonia, and other nasties tend to naturaly break down and go away. Part of why cigars need to breath when they age and why aging helps.

Sipping on a cigar rather than taking drags will lessen the issues of bitterness.

If you have a cigar getting bitter on you, try to purge out some of the nastyness by blowwing through it, this will take some of the built up nasty and "purge" it from the cigar so you don't have to taste it. If you have to relight a cigar, dump as much ash as you can, try to light without drawing and blow on the end or through the cigar to get it going again.

Lastly, it seems to me that the moister the cigar, the more the nasty tends to show up. Try dry boxing your cigars for a couple days before smoking and avoid smoking on a very humid or rainy day.

Good luck.

To add one more thing to the endless knowledge posted my Mitch, if you find that the end is building up with tar, clip a little more off. You run the risk of unwrapping but if you are careful you will get rid of most of the tar and be able to finish your stick without a nasty ass taste.

Well put Mitch. I also find that punching a cigar will tend to have the tars build up more as well while a nice cut will let them release with each puff and not build up as much.
