So I've been on a REALLY fun journey in the short time since I discovered this site. While it was 5+ years ago that my interest in cigars first started building, this past (almost) year has seen my interest turn into what the wife jokingly (?) calls an obsession. For this I have BOTL.org and many of the brothers on this site to thank.
The cigar that started it all for me was the Padron 2000 maduro. I can remember the night clearly. On vacation in Cali, I stopped at a local B&M (I've been meaning to look up which one it was, but it somewhere around San Rafael) and picked up the 2000. I sat on a table outside the hotel and nubbed that cigar...man was it good. The fact that a cigar could have that many subtle flavors, floored me.
In the time since, I might have had one or two more, but they do not clearly stand out to me. And in the last year, I've been busy working on my Tat whore status (loooong way to go there, but enjoying workin' on it!), and purchasing many good cigars. Along the way, Wade (Volusianator) was kind enough to sell me a hand-made humidor...a beauty if I do say so myself...to give all these new cigars a home (see attachment), thanks Wade!
Tonight I revisited the cigar that drove me to this obsession, er, hobby....and I was disappointed. In fact, I admit I've had a couple of them the past few months, and I've been MILDLY disappointed each time. Now maybe this is my mind playing tricks on me. Maybe I've built it up in my mind to legendary proportions. Or maybe I've had bad luck on which ones I've purchased. Or...maybe my tastes have changed? Anyway, it was slight downer for me and wanted to share/confess my disappointment in such a well liked cigar. Here's hoping my luck or tastes change back! If it doesn't come back, I CAN tell you that I've developed a liking for many other brands in the past year (Tats, Guapos, cigars made on an island, Illusiones, Padillas, Lempira, Fuente, etc, etc) in large part because of this community.
So, more important than that Padron confession, I want to take the time (if you've made it this far through my rambling, you deserve a reward), in this time of Thanksgiving, to thank BOTL.org and the brothers on this site for their GENEROSITY, advice, and acceptance. For some reason I haven't yet donated to the actual site, but I plan on doing that for 2009 (I want the "Donor" avatar!). I also plan on thanking as many brothers as possible in that time-honored BOTL tradition...mailbox destruction!
Thank you BOTL, and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!
