  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Thank you BOTL, with a Padron confession...

So I've been on a REALLY fun journey in the short time since I discovered this site. While it was 5+ years ago that my interest in cigars first started building, this past (almost) year has seen my interest turn into what the wife jokingly (?) calls an obsession. For this I have BOTL.org and many of the brothers on this site to thank.

The cigar that started it all for me was the Padron 2000 maduro. I can remember the night clearly. On vacation in Cali, I stopped at a local B&M (I've been meaning to look up which one it was, but it somewhere around San Rafael) and picked up the 2000. I sat on a table outside the hotel and nubbed that cigar...man was it good. The fact that a cigar could have that many subtle flavors, floored me.

In the time since, I might have had one or two more, but they do not clearly stand out to me. And in the last year, I've been busy working on my Tat whore status (loooong way to go there, but enjoying workin' on it!), and purchasing many good cigars. Along the way, Wade (Volusianator) was kind enough to sell me a hand-made humidor...a beauty if I do say so myself...to give all these new cigars a home (see attachment), thanks Wade!

Tonight I revisited the cigar that drove me to this obsession, er, hobby....and I was disappointed. In fact, I admit I've had a couple of them the past few months, and I've been MILDLY disappointed each time. Now maybe this is my mind playing tricks on me. Maybe I've built it up in my mind to legendary proportions. Or maybe I've had bad luck on which ones I've purchased. Or...maybe my tastes have changed? Anyway, it was slight downer for me and wanted to share/confess my disappointment in such a well liked cigar. Here's hoping my luck or tastes change back! If it doesn't come back, I CAN tell you that I've developed a liking for many other brands in the past year (Tats, Guapos, cigars made on an island, Illusiones, Padillas, Lempira, Fuente, etc, etc) in large part because of this community.

So, more important than that Padron confession, I want to take the time (if you've made it this far through my rambling, you deserve a reward), in this time of Thanksgiving, to thank BOTL.org and the brothers on this site for their GENEROSITY, advice, and acceptance. For some reason I haven't yet donated to the actual site, but I plan on doing that for 2009 (I want the "Donor" avatar!). I also plan on thanking as many brothers as possible in that time-honored BOTL tradition...mailbox destruction!

Thank you BOTL, and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!!

Well said Sauza. I think you will continue to notice that the more different sticks you try, the more you develop your palate. As your palate and tastes evolve you often find that the cigars you enjoyed early on in your smoking career are just not as good as you remember. I would not look at this as a disappointment, but as a lesson learned, a taste evolved, and money saved by knowing one more cigar not to spend your money on. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well.

BOTL indeed makes one feel that way. To think I once thought the LIEBs I had were as far as I'd go... This community is not only a bloody neat source of information for cigar smokers; this truly is a brotherhood. Thanks everyone and a happy thanksgiving as well.

Greg, I am thankful for brothers like you around too. A cigar by itself is one of lifes great pleasures, but sharing with brothers brings me just as much joy as a good cigar does. Happy thanksgiving to all!:kissforeh

for sure tastes change. i think at least every year or two i move on to some new flavors and end up leaving some old ones behind. there will always be a few that will stay constant, however.
and not to belittle the giving to the brothers here, but i just got two boxes ready to ship to the troops for my thanksgiving.
my best goes out to the rest of the brothers here. i've sure enjoyed getting to know some of you and hope to improve on that number as the year goes on.
happy thanksgiving botl's!

Very nice story. My experience was just the opposite though actually, I had a Padron 3Kmaduro the other day and it was just fantastic! The box has been in the humidor 3-4 years and I finally opened it, man it was great.

I'm surprised to see that you still use the shelves with my logo facing outward...cool!

Cigars are a journey where it takes different paths according to your own tastes. What you once liked will change when you taste different blends. Don't dispair and they usually come back around. The nice thing is that there are so many cigars out there for you to try.

very true what some of the brothers have said... when you first tried that padron 2000 your taste had not evolved. now that it has.. the cigar might not taste as phenomenal as it did back then.

keep in mind also that much like a bottle of wine a given cigar can vary in taste from cigar to cigar or from box to box... it is an organic product and so from time to time you will find inconsistencies.

aging of the cigars can vary the taste tremendously as well. i wouldn't give up on the padron 2000.. it is my favorite bang for the buck cigar and you might be surprised to find yourself going back to it in the near future...
