I've said this before - but this is just a reminder. I'll be breaking BOTL over time in order to get it into a far better place. Just be patient if you can't reach us! We'll be back
That Sea Line bag is very cool. It seems that barrel aging tobacco is getting popular so I'm guessing that the old t-shirt aroma in your bag is along the same idea.
When I've considered trying to store leaf for extended periods in an air tight container I worry about mold. What if the leaf is...
I another post StogieJim was asking about how to store leaf between rolling sessions. For those of us living in cold climates where our houses are heated in the winter, the RH in the house is usually around 30%. It can be difficult to keep full leaves even close to a proper RH for rolling...
Wow, 3 no's so far. Doesn't anyone share my fear of beetles? I see freezing as a simple insurance policy..... or maybe it's the price they have to pay to live in the climate controlled luxury of my beautiful humidor.
There is lots of discussion regarding whether to freeze cigars after you buy them and before they go into your humidor, but I'm wondering about this home-rolling community. Do you freeze your sticks before they go into the humi?
Personally, I freeze every cigar I purchase and every cigar I...
I have problems with getting a consistent draw when rolling. I was thinking of testing the draw before the wrapper goes on like they do at the factories but I didn't think it would work because the leaves are extra damp. Do you test the draw of each cigar before wrapping?
This has been a very interesting thread. Thanks for joining in. The actual answer to my original question about leaf from Whole Leaf has been answered by Don, the owner. He tells me all their "cigar" tobacco has been fermented! I guess that explains why it smokes so well.
Yeah, I wondered about that "grown in Connecticut" stuff. That's why I'm asking about this fermenting thing. It is hard to figure out exactly what they mean. The best is to get opinions from my roller brothers regarding any smoking difference between the two suppliers.
I agree that $30 is...
One more observation. In the nice textbook scan that Marc provided we can see that the word "curing" is used for the initial drying where the moisture and chlorophyll dissipate from the leaves leaving them a beautiful brown color. After that is complete, all the tobacco goes through a...
This is the quote from LO that states that they have "cured and fermented" leaves while WL states that their leaves are "cured" To me the words "curing" and "aging" are synonymous. While they improve the tobacco they do not replace fermenting. There is a chemical process that takes place...
I haven't rolled much in the last couple of years but this forum has pushed me over the edge and I'm ready to order some leaf.
I've ordered from Leaf Only in the past. They say their leaf is "fermented". I was happy with the product. This time I am considering getting some leaf from Whole...
OMG..... I've been enjoying cigars for decades, I've even rolled a couple of hundred myself, and I never realized that a "triple cap" is simply a spiral. I thought it was 3 separate caps that were different lengths. I can't believe I was so ignorant for so long. I feel embarrassed!
So I bought one of these recently. I figured it was cheap so I couldn't go wrong. It turned out to be very stiff and didn't cut clean. I also bought one for my son and will put it in his stocking at Christmas. I'll see how that one works later.
Every year the TOP 25 list from CA gets a lot of cynicism. I happen to enjoy the magazine. It's a guilty pleasure to read a men's lifestyle magazine that's not full of half-dressed young girls. Of course they tend to review sticks that their advertisers promote. I'd do the same. The top 10...
Yea, I was not very observant when I was blending. I just had a few different types of leaves and I mixed them up different ways, but I never paid attention to primings. I defiantly don't want to discourage anyone from starting out. I'm sure anyone can do better than I did. My sticks looked...
Thanks for the offer. I don't think I've ever been to Dull-Aware so you never know.
While I love cigars and have been smoking them for most of my life, I don't smoke in the winter. Cigar smoking is a bit of a religious experience for me. I never smoke while I'm working outdoors, nor do I...
Very interesting. I usually finished the head by twisting so that it would taper a bit. It makes perfect sense that if I'm twisting the leaves at the end then I'll screw up the draw. It's obvious but I never thought of that before.
All the advice I'm getting is much appreciated. Now that...
One of the best things about rolling at home is that you always have the materials at hand to repair things like split wrappers. I've done it many times. I have even opened up commercial cigars with bad draws and re-wrapped them tighter or looser as needed.
When I was doing lots of rolling a couple of years ago my biggest problem was getting a reasonable draw. I rolled some both with and without a mold. I had some that were way too tight so I would roll the next batch looser and then it would be too loose. Some were just right but I had...
That is not my experience. I bought some leaves from Leaf Only and I rolled some. The rolling went well but I was not impressed with the flavor. I then grew some leaf, fermented it and tried that. It also was not that great. Everything I have rolled has been OK but not great. I'm the first...
Lots of opinions in this thread. It seems obvious that they all work well. The main difference seems to be price. My contribution to this conversation is to say "more is better". The more humidity control media you have then the more stable it will be. I therefore, use KL since it is CHEAP !
