• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

How do you hold the pipe in your mouth?

I usually hold it in my hand and only rise it to my lips when I'm going to puff. Like Dougful, I never clinch the pipe with my teeth, I just hold it balanced between them. Holding the pipe in your mouth for long periods will make your smoking wet.

    Pipe Lighter

I just bought a Corona Old Boy (butane). I couldn't resist the pipe-shapes design on the lighter itself! I've never owned a lighter before. Getting over the fear of singeing pipes, have not quite got the hang of it yet. Not sure what's the best angle to tilt the lighter into the bowl. How...

    Black Cavendish?

Cavendish-processed tobacco is usually so prepared in order to be artificially flavoured ("cased".) Unflavoured ("English") Cavendish, however, is also used to make a heavy mixture lighter and milder. It gives a smokey English blend a creamier underlying feel. A classic unflavoured...

I recently discovered Pease's Fillmore, a red Virginia-and-Périque blend, delectable for people who love the sec semi-sweet taste of red Virginia.

    Flake tobacco

If you want rubbed tobacco, buy ready-rubbed, or ribbon cut. I like flake because it smokes slower, and it's thus cooler. Also, the flavour is more intense. So I don't rub it at all. I fold it and stuff it into the pipe. This makes it hard to light, but once it gets going, it's heaven.

P-lip, fishtail, army mouthpiece. What is the difference?

"P lip" refers to the lip part of the bit in some Peterson pipes. In the Peterson Lip, the hole points upwards from the bit, towards your palate, as opposed to outwards, towards your tongue. It's supposed to spare your tongue from tongue bite. Opinions differ about its efficacy. A fish-tail...

    Pipe books

Richard Carleton Hacker's Rare Smoke, about collectible pipes, is mentioned above. His The Ultimate Pipe Book, two American editions, now out-of-print, a handsome British one, and even in German translation, is essential. He also published Pipe Smoking: a Twenty-First Century Guide. All his...
