• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

    Pipers ROLL CALL!!

1—2 bowls a day since I was in high school, before the Lewis & Clark expedition. Started as a Latakia lover (Rattray's Red Rappary; Balkan Sobranie; Nightcap) slowly evolved into a Virginia and Virginia/Périque smoker. I am now delightedly exploring every Oriental mix without Latakia I can...

    Clay Pipes?

I recently bought a very long alderman made in Gouda, in Holland. It smokes cool because it's so long. I assume it's very fragile, again because of the length. The neutral taste of clay is a bit disconcerting at first. Like my porcelain regimental pipe, I consider it more of a curiosity...

    What was your first pipe?

It was a new, small Kaywoodie dublin with plumbing. Pretty horrible, but what did I know? I've still got it, somewhere.

    Pics of a Real Adict

He stores it for aging, like a connoisseur. Also he seems to have a lot of the McClelland Christmas mixtures, which are limited edition. So if there's one you like, you need to stack up.

    What's Your Current Favorite Tabac?

I used to love very robust Latakia mixtures (Nightcap, Balkan Sobranie, Rattray's Red Rapparee) but have moved slowly but surely away from them. Body chemistry changes with time. My regular smoke now tends to consist either of Virginia & Périque formulas [Escudo Navy Deluxe, Three Nuns (when...

    Cheap Savinelli Pipes?

I have a couple of Savinelli Bing's Favorites which look and smoke just as well as my Dunhill silver mounted Bing Crosby, which cost ten times as much. Lesson: Dunhills are outrageously overpriced and Savinellis are often fabulous values. Look especially for the straight-grained Fiammata...

    Inflation

 In South America they smoke tobacco cigars with a cured corn-leaf wrapper known as chala. The filler is usually a strong type of Burley and what is known as criollo (creole), a strong black tobacco which is the nicotiana equivalent of the mission grape. Milder versions are also...

    Inflation

I hadn't bought pipe tobacco in quite some time. I have kind of a lifetime supply at home and unless it is a novelty or a must-have replenishment, I just go to Aladdin's chest and pick something already at hand. I've got enough Escudo and Nightcap to last me till the foxes say good night. I...

    Fiscal Responsibility

And then again, you only live once. Unless you are depriving your children of things they need and are entitled to, I say have fun. After all, having an enviable financial situation when you are past enjoying it is silly. Life is for living.

Thanks, that's very interesting. Is the whole blend just Virginia and Samsoun?

    Secret blend?

I have never seen a pipe made out of marble and can't even imagine what they could look like! Decorative pipes made out of rosewood or elderwood are traditional in Germany and Switzerland, but, in general, regular tree-wood burns out when used for a pipe. Only porous briar root has been found...

    Pipe torch lighter

I recently bought a Corona Old Boy for $130, something that did not make me happy, but I couldn't resist the pipe-shapes design engraved on the lighter's body. One only lives once. I 've not yet fully got the hang of it. (I've never owned a lighter before.) It lights the full pipe very...

McClellands Yenidje Supreme - first impression

Thank you for this review. Very interesting. Really prompts one to sample these blends. The British first used naturally aromatic Turkish tobacco to temper the Virginia they normally preferred (this was before Burley was discovered). Have we neglected Oriental mixes? This posting suggest a...

    Secret blend?

I confess that I have never seen a Chinese-made pipe. I wonder if they are imported into the US. The only Asian-made pipes I have seen here are very expensive Japanese ones. Inexpensive "basket" pipes on sale in New York all seem to be made in Italy. I am surprised pipes aren't made in...

    Pipers ROLL CALL!!

Heavens! That brings me back! I used to buy that from them when they were still on Lexington Avenue. I loved that place. Small, tidy, classy shop that smelled like heaven. Beside pipe-smoking, I enjoy nasal snuff. WOULDN'T go in the New York subway without my snuff box!!

    Virginias

Smoking Virginia can be very difficult indeed: it overheats very easily and then tastes like burnt egg. It will also flay your tongue. It is worth the effort, though, 'cause if ever it gets going well, 'tis the prince of piping experiences. The discipline is to smoke slowly, in very gentle...
