Those are both beautiful pipes. Just my opinion, but I wouldn't consider either one an author.

Top one is a squashed tomato
Bottom one is a diplomat (unless the lines are being hidden by the hand holding it.)

yeah, i think it's hard, if not impossible, to really keep an author shape with anything other than a taper stem. agree on the diplomat/author shape too. they share some elements, but it does get away from being an author.

So, does anyone second the motion for a Cumberland stem at $5 adder?
Are we settled on the color of the briar? Because if that's the color I would "second" for a cumberland. But if the briar is stained a different color I would have to see it to make a decision.

Saddle bit or not is no deal breaker to me. I can see both sides of that debate.

I think that the Cumberland stem is a no brainer.

Any thought about doing it in unfinished briar to let the color develop on its own?....that might be too divisive in opinions though.

Actually I think CaptainRon has a good point about going slightly darker in stain now that I think about it more .
