Some good one a have already been mentioned.

Costner in Mr Brooks. Don't like Costner but he killed it.
Johnny Depp in anything outside of pirate movies. Blow comes to mind.
Scarlett Johannson in woody Allen movies (match point and Vicky Christina Barcelona)- bonus point for being so hot but she kills the roles.
Tom banks in forest gump goes without saying.
Sean Penn in everything - best actor of the generation IMO. I am Sam, milk- 2 complex roles but he has tons.

John malcovic in rounders.
Clooney in O brother.

How about Hugo Weaving in "V for Vendetta". Takes a pretty good actor to convey that much emotion without being able to use their face, IMHO.

The one...The only...The joker.

This one popped into my head right away….

Another one I really enjoyed that was a little out of his "norm" was Will Smith in Pursuit of Happiness, though I am just a huge Will Smith fan in general.

Tom hanks in Castaway was another one I thought of. He was basically the only actor in 99% of the movie yet I still watch it every time it is on.
