Anyone out there into powerlifting? Squats, Deads, Bench, OHP?

I started generally working out 2 years ago after a decade long layoff. I spent some time dropping fat and some time bro lifting and then found my way to compound movements. I started squatting and then eventually started deadlifting, benching and OHP'ing. I still do some hypertrophic work for joints, connective tissue ... and why lie, because it's never a bad thing to be more aesthetically pleasing to your wife. But while I still have a LOT of fat to lose, powerlifting has really bitten me hard. :)

Squat PR : 425
DL PR : 455
Bench : 225
OHP: 185

I've been working on my squats for a while and my DL'ing for probably 6mo or so. I just started experimenting with Benching form and OHP'ing with any real volume. Hopefully those will go up over the next few months.

My goal by end of year is to DL 500, Squat 450, Bench 255 and OHP 225

So who else likes powerlifting? What are your PRs? What are your goals?

Just be careful. I did a lot of powerlifting as a youngster until I shredded my trap muscle on a deadlift. The nerve damage and scar tissue in there has been the bane of my existence for decades since. There's chronic stabbing and burning in my neck and shoulder. Some days, the pain is excruciating. I've seen numerous specialists, to no avail. I've learned to live with it, but it sucks. Now, I'm just fat...the 12 oz. curl is my max lift.

I hear ya man. I'm careful to progressively warm up. Injury is always a possibility but in truth it's always a possibility in the pursuit of any physical activity. I played injured through high school and college for the most part. In my advanced years tho I've gotten much better at peddling back if i feel like I'm in trouble.

Do them 12oz curls for the girls :)

Ever squat two days in a row, Charlie? o_O
I've been lifting for over 35 years, been through power lifting, bodybuilding and all kinds of variations. Bad shoulder and old age have dropped the weights on some lifts, on others I am as strong as I ever was....but I still hit the gym 4 days out of every 5.... which puts me one day behind Charlie every 5 days. :D

Those are great numbers, how tall/ heavy are you? I dunno if Id consider myself a powerlifter... But I do lift very regularly, as well as crossfit-esc style workouts. Im 6'2, I DL 425, squat about 350, bench 265 and OHP I never go more than 135 do too a few shoulder surgeries Ive had over the years.

My squat goal is 400, Deadlift Im pretty happy with. And bench Id like to hit 300. Gotta stay functional and agile though as well! Great thread keep up the good work!

@coppereagl nice numbers! You pull conventional or sumo?

I don't consider myself a "powerlifter" either but I really enjoy that kind of lifting. Its one of those classifications where I think it's more about the style of lifting and making progress than lifting 500+, but that said, I think I'd need to pull elite numbers before I'd call myself a powerlifter.

I'm 6'1 and 270 ... a good bit of fat to lose still :/
I'd like to drop another 50lbs at least.

I pull conventional, I throw in RDL's on leg day quite frequently (no where near that weigh of course!). I think dead lift is probably one of my all time favorites. You are absolutely right about style and form though! I do know many guys who put up impressive numbers, but everytime I watch I just cringe, waiting for a pop and a yelp. Im not a certified strength coach but Ive been too several training seminars and a couple of fitness schools. But some guys just dont want to hear anything.
You eat right, and continue those big lifts that 50lbs will be 25, then 10 and before you know it Youll be damn proud, so will your lady friend

I have been powerlifting for about 10 years now. Mainly do it as training for sport, but also because its what I really enjoy to do in the gym.
My main power lifts are squat, bench and clean with some deadlifts worked in during various phases. Herniated a disc (L5, S1) doing a deadlift 7 years ago and have really cut back on them since.

Those are great PR numbers you have. My power is all in my legs. My squat and clean are leaps and bounds ahead of my bench, as far as numbers are concerned. I'm in an explosive phase right now and did a 3 x 3 reps with 200kg yesterday. Thats about as heavy as I get any more.

@jonesry09 I'm similarly built (under all my fat lol) ... my legs have always been far stronger than my upper body.

Some Oly lifts have looked pretty interesting to me lately. How'd you get into doing Cleans? Ever snatch or jerk? (Waits for jokes lol)
Picked up cleans in college. The strength coach always had us doing cleans. Have done snatches (the lift haha) off and on as well but have found it to be hard on my shoulders when catching it. Instead I have resorted to high pulls instead. Similar technique and gains without the pressure on the shoulders.

Makes sense. Interesting to hear too for me because I lack serious mobility in my elbows. I front squat 275 but have to go cross-armed (part of the reason why cleans have remained something I'm interested in but not pursued).

I did bodybuilding workouts for about 7 years. Then began doing powerlifting routines for more strength, broke my collarbone in MMA class a few months back and now got sort of fat. Not as big as I was in sophmore year in college but still not svelt and the broken ollarbon has me doing more bodybuilding stuff again which sucks because I was up to 275 bench, 395 squat, and 455 deadlifts. My love for the industry is what had me start my company.

@jonesry09 Sumo deadlift high pulls! Great exercise, love those. I too dont trust my shoulders with heavy snatches, to much weight overhead

@ENV thats a tough injury, i broke mine years ago, it seemed like it ached for months after it had "healed"

@swingerofbirches there are alot of great tutorial videos online for cleans, especially the series by jason kalipha on youtube. Its a great full body lift, even a lighter weight just working form youll find yourself having to catch your breath in between sets
