  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I am setting up a winedor and want to find out what you guys think is the best digital hygrometer for my needs. Any advice of the thermohygrometers as well?

Thanks in advance

A lot of people use the HygroSet hygrometers that you can find at many cigar related websites that are able to be adjusted to the correct setting once calibrated. These are simple and easy to use and the nice thing is you can adjust them to the correct read out.

I have used both the HygroSet and Acu Rite hygrometer and I actually prefer the Acu Rite because it shows you the low/high setting within a 24 hour period for both temp and Rh. I like this because you can see if your humi is having wide fluctuations of temp/Rh and you wouldn't know this by only using the HygroSet unless you watch it constantly. The only negative thing with the Acu Rite is that you can't adjust it after calibrating. What I have done, is simply write on the back with marker a +2, or whatever adjustment I needed to do after calibrating. So when I see the Acu Rite reading 63%, it's actually 65% etc.

Here is a link to the Acu Rite on Amazon... it's $10 there. I paid $7.xx at Walmart but not sure if they still sell those there as it's been a couple years.

If you want to go a little more high end, you can get a wireless system. I just bought this system for my cabinet humi and have 3 wireless sensors placed in the cabinet and I have one readout sitting on my desk. You can calibrate the readouts and it also shows min/max for temp/Rh. The min/max shows all time until you reset it, not every 24 hours like the Acu Rite. I don't like this but it's still nice to have.

It was cheapest for me to order direct from the site and you can mix/match for how many sensors and readouts you prefer.

But for a wineador, I think the Acu Rite or Hygro is just fine unless you prefer to just see a readout at your desk etc.

Argh! I ordered one, but instead of getting the hygrometer remotes, I got the temp only remotes. :( Have to exchange it all now, grrrrr.

Sorry for the old thread bump, figured it was better than starting a new one.

What do you guys think about this for a Hygrometer pack? The price is right for me because I need more than one. Good deal?

Price is very good.... but those are not adjustable... and they only are accurate to within +/- 5%....

I would look for something that you can adjust/calibrate..

Okay, thanks. I have one already that I got from Famous but at $20 a pop I was hoping to find something cheaper so that I can buy 3. The search goes on.

Yeah, that's what I have now I just didn't want to spend $60 on Hygrometers right now. You know how many singles I could buy with that money?? haha

If you can find the old adjustable Xikars, I'd recommend them. I have several and all have performed flawlessly. I replaced the battery this year and they were all within +/-1 before the calibration

If you cant, the new Western Digital Hygroset IV is also adjustable, and has great reviews, though I don't have any myself..

I have been using an ambient weather model for about 1-1/2 years and have been very happy with it. You are not able to calibrate the individual sensors but you are able to change the display on the control unit so that the reading you get makes up for any difference in humidity. In other words you do a calibration by getting the remote sensors stable in a 75% environment and then adjust the desktop control unit to read 75% for each of the remote sensors. It's really quite simple and very accurate.

The unit that I am using is no longer made but if I were to buy one today I would go with this one http://www.ambientweather.com/amws08x4kit.html It will read up to 8 remote locations and you can buy it with anywhere from 2 to 8 remote sensors.

WS-08-X2 (2 sensors) $38.99
WS-08-X3 (3 sensors) $47.99
WS-08-X4 $56.49
WS-08-X5 $65.99
WS-08-X6 $75.49
WS-08-X7 $83.99
WS-08-X8 $93.49

If budget is a concern or you do not have the need to monitor a large amount of cigars in multiple locations (yet) you can always buy one of the kits with fewer sensors and add additional sensors later (up to 8 total).

The main benefit for me was that I no longer need to open my humidors in order to check the humidity which allows them to be more stable long term. I also have all my readings in one spot on my desk so all I have to do hit a button and I can scroll from sensor to sensor. Also cost wise if you compare this to individual hygrometers at $13 each it works out to be about the same (4 unit Ambient Weather unit = $56.49 / 4x hygrosets @ $13 each = $52)

The added convenience makes this a sure winner for me.

Thanks for the info, that helps. Yeah I don't have the need to monitor a large amount yet, this is only for a small wineador and it has 2 storage compartments so I would need one for each. My collection is still very small but at $5 a pop these should work fine.

Still new here, so basically they would be about 5% +/-? So I could put them in a zip lock bag with a 70% Boveda pack for a few days and see what it reads at and then always remember how much they are off by, correct?

No. when calibrating your hygrometer you always calibrate it to 75%. That is the proven humidity of salt in a saturated solution (if you do the salt test) as well as the humidity level of the Boveda calibration kits. basically you line your hygrometer up with a known number (75%) so that you know it is accurate. Then you place it in your humidor to monitor whatever humidity level you decide to maintain. Once calibrated, If your humidor is at 70% the hygrometer will read 70%, if your humidor is at 65% it will read 65% etc. 75% is used to calibrate it though because that is the most certain number that can be generated. Most digital hygrometers automatically re-set to 75% for this reason.

What 5% +/- means is that if you calibrated it properly you are going to get a reading that can be off by 5% in either direction. In other words if your actual humidity is 70% a hygrometer that is +/- 5% can read anywhere from 65% to 75%. The reason Stogieninja is advising against it is that it is not very accurate. something that is +/- 2% would be much better.
