  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Can you judge a cigar from one stick?

The short answer is, never condemn a smoke based on a single stick.
I dunno about that...ever had a cheapassed DYED maduro stain your lips while you smoke through its thoroughly metallic-tasting body?

I was able to condem that one after just one cigar! :thinkidea

Tedski your the man, But before you do Is there a big difference between a Opus X and a Nice hemmingway, or a Don Carlos?
Yes, there is a significant different between these three Fuente lines. OpusX is the strongest - with a core of rich tobacco and Jalapeno-like spiciness (especially when young). Don Carlos is a notch down in strength - also with rich tobacco and sweeter spice / peppery flavors. Hemmingway is another notch down the power scale - with more cedar and less spice/pepper than the Don Carlos.

I actually prefer the Hemmingway line best among these three. Flavor, consistency and price make it a good value as well.

In order for me to judge a cigar, I have to have atleast 5-10 from multiple boxes and may'be different years. This could take time but it eventually happens.

Edited - To add that I'm mainly talking about habanos since they can vary from cigar to cigar. I would usually give domestics 3 tries since they're pretty much uniform in flavor and are rarely off. And nice going Ted!

IMO if you want a better comparison, get them from several different boxes also. Don't just buy 3-5 at one time from the same box.

Personal experiance: I ordered a bundle of 6 from CI once and liked them as well as the other guy who I had one out of that bundle. Couple months later, they went on a one day my special. We recomended buying them to several of our friends (including Esheep). Well, when they showed up, of the 4 bundles that were bought, none of them were worth a shit. Too loose, tasted like crap, etc. Needless to say, most of them are still sitting there.

I agree with Randy and will go for at least three. The I get a box. This works sometimes and not others.

I must say tho I have had amazing boxes and Ok boxes but I was ALWAYS very glad I had a full box when they were amazing and rarely really unhappy if they were just OK.

I think over all, taste is aquired over a long time which I know. I guess it has less to do with prestige and more to do with smoke what tastes best to your own smoking taste. As always, I ment no offense to anyone, or anything. I am just always wondering about different aspects of cogar smoking buying and collecting. Sorry if I pissed anyone off.

I don't think you pissed anyone off...this is all part of the journey, Donk. You never learn how other think unless you ask, and in this hobby, it helps to know some opinions on things.

I doubt you pissed anyone off. This is a board that takes care of it new members. The question you asked is actually a question that is still debated.
I'm closer to the conservative (CVM) side and would say you cant judge a "good" cigar by it's brand or year. There are years I favor and brands I favor. That doesn't mean they are good. I would say with NC it's ok to blow off a cheap brand. With CC you might want to give multiple years and brands a try. From multiple boxes is ultimal. But, lets be real you cant really do that. Try them all out if you can.

Takes a lot to piss this crowd off and questions are not on the list. Like I said, I have learned more here than I have hanging out at B&M's for 20 years. Lots of good opinions. Listen to what these guys smoke. You'll find stuff that you would never known about. Like petit corona's mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Ya pissed me off!!! No, just kidding.

In response to your first question, no I don't think you can. You need at least 3 IMO to see what a cigar is about.

LOL, I still laugh when going back over threads I posted when I first joined. They seem so silly now, but back then hell I didn't know a damn thing about cigars. What a steep slippery slide it has been.

Oh no!
It's another one of these:

Perhaps feeling a bit nostalgic, Steve?

I sometimes look who is online and what they are looking at. Usually the Guest are looking up some older stuff. The good ones I like to bump. Mods do not mind as long is not an intro thread.

Kelly when I saw the thread I remembered it, I still say was a good question and hope it helps someone else today (I bet it will).

if i try a smoke and just flat dont' care for it, i'll almost never try it again unless i have heard from reputable sources that it may be good. but for me, two strikes and you're out.
on the other hand, if a stick is fantastic, it would then depend on it's availability. if it is limited, i'd probably take the plunge and buy a box. if it's easy to come by, i'd want to try some different sizes, if available to see if that makes a difference.

I have gotten into the habit of trying a 5er of cigars before passing judgement on them. But as previously stated sometimes a cigar just sucks, and I don't bother trying another. But I have also learned to give the cigar a full burn. I have heard guys say ah this sucks and throw it out after less than half a cigar. I will atleast give the cigar a full run, I have had cigars suck for the first half and become excellent on the second half.
