From what I've heard, the Candela was all the rage at the turn of the 1900's. It was called A.M.S. (American Market Selection) but then again...they did fall out of favor for a reason...

I believe it was very popular in the 1960's too. I've read that the Cuban cigars that JFK had Pierre Salinger find before he signed the embargo were all candela wrappers which were supposedly his favorite.

Back in the 50's and 60's (yes, I'm old enough to have been there and remember it), candelas were the most popular wrapper in the U.S. to the point where they were also called American Market Selection or AMS. The only way to find out if you will like it is to try one. The wrapper has a distinctly sweet flavor, even before it is lit. To me, it also has a bit of a burning leaf smell (I know, what else would it smell like, since it is a burning leaf!). I like to smoke one, usually an A.F. 8-5-8, maybe a couple of times a year. FWIW.

Seamus gifted me one tonight at our local herf...as he pulls me into better cigars more and more.

If I like this one I'd be curious to find them.

I've smoked a few graycliff emeralds. Very different. Not as mild as you might think, kinda vegetal and smooth. Not bad, def the best candela out there imho. Just a bit too expensive.

I've had a couple and they are ok. Nothing special, no mint flavor but more like a regular stick. They're not bad.
