  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Ive been told that the 'correct way' is to use a cutter, just like 'the correct way' is to light up with cedar spills.

I liked my punch before it got lost in the move. Makes always a good result.
I don't believe that it funnels the smoke in any inconvient manner or alter the flavors, as long as you don't use a tiny punch on a huge rg.

That said, my punch is yet to be found again so I only use my cutter nowaday.

I use a guillotine cutter 95% of the time, occasionally, I'll use a V-Cutter and sometimes I use a punch.
I use both I use the punch on smaller cigars and the cutter on larger ones seems to work well for me
I do pretty much the opposite of this. I use a punch more often on large ring gauge cigars (I don't smoke many) because I worry that a straight cut will make the draw too loose.

That's part of what makes cigars so interesting, though, everyone has their own approach and preferences. It's why my favorite cigar saying is "smoke what you like, like what you smoke"

I've been using my punch more and more lately, more out of convenience than anything. I dislike carrying my cutter around, but there's always a punch on my key chain. Plus I'm pretty exclusively smoking smaller RGs so it works well

I think if I were to really think on it, it would be safe to say I prefer a punch. But generally speaking, I use what I have. Friday, that meant my pocket knife lol.

V cutter changed my life. It's my preferred cutter. I use it on everything I possibly can. If the draw is still too tight, I rotate it 90° and cut it again. I've never had an unraveling problem since.

I may be a bit old school here, but I have read many times that a punch CAN plug up a cigar that is densely packed and/or poorly constructed. Since I see no advantage to a punch with the sizes of cigars I smoke, I am content with my Palio...Gives me a nice even cut, with no worries of pushing any part of the cigar into itself.

Just ordered a Xikar Xi1 Black Cutter along with 36 cigars i have never had before. Never tried a v or punch but will eventually get one of each to try. I have only had one 60 rg and used a straight cutter with it and it still had a good draw, not too open. Don't think i will try another 60 again though.

I mainly go off what I am feeling at the moment. Usually on smaller ring gauge I prefer a cut and on anything around 52 ring gauge or above I punch if the mood strikes

I'm a sucker for every cutter and I have every kind but my favorite is a Cats Eye V cutter....amazing cut as it's not just a regular V Cut....a regular V cut will cut straight across the cap while a Cats Eye will use a "scooping" action and that facilitates a better draw because the cut goes further into the cap without taking too much off the outside of the cap thus unravelling the cigar.
The second photo is the one I bought 11 years ago....from Boston Cutter Company ( it's a table top that went for around $600....yeah..I know )that also sells a smaller version called the Lil Guy..I bought that about 14 years ago for $100. There are copies of that one but don't buy them...they are made cheap. The first pic is of the Xikar Cats Eye...see the difference in the notch as opposed to the other V Cuts?

I too am content with my Palio. When I cut my cigars I try to cut as little as possible from the cap. I can cut more as needed.

I am a punch cutter. Same cut every time! However, a v-cutter will be next option.
you do need a good sharp punch though. My favorite is the Xikar Xi 009.
