This is probably the best Singer/Songwriter tune ever written

Down The River by Chris Knight

I was eighteen
My brother was twenty-one
One Saturday evening
When all the work was done
We went down to the river,
Had some trout line to run

My brother Walter
Had a fight the week before
Knocked a boy named Wilson
Through the pool hall door
They said you don't mess with Wilson
Unless you want a war

I put the boat in the water,
I made the engine run
I loaded the lantern
Against the sinking sun
And my brother Walter
Was loading his gun
And we went down the river

Down past the coal docks
We were running our line
Heard some drunken boaters
Racing up behind
It was Wilson and his cousin
Had trouble on their minds

They passed on by us
Probably going to tend their pot
We headed up the river
With the fish we caught
But before we made the landing
I thought i heard a shot
Back down the river

My brother Walter fell over the side
I couldn't find him no matter how i tried
And looked along the bank
But i couldn't find where they'd hide

They drug the river,
They searched it up and down
Couldn't find his body
So they decided that he'd drowned
But i knew better
And Wilson bragged around town

So one night I floated down
Right above Wilson's shack
I hid in the woods
Till i saw him walk out back
I put a bullet in his head
I dropped him in his tracks
And we went down the river

Down below the trestle
Where the water runs slow
I chained him to an anvil
And then I let him go
And five years later
I ain't told a soul

And I ain't done much fishing,
I hardly wet a line
The death of my brother
Is still heavy on my mind
I've been thinking Wilson's cousin
Better find a place to hide
Cause I'm going down the river
Yeah I'm going down the river

Chris Knight has a song called "William" that might be equally as good. But I think I like this one a hair better. You be the judge.

I heard Robert Earl Keen interview Chris Knight one time and he told Chris "You know, I sure am glad you are a Singer/Songwriter, because I am afraid you might have been a serial killer otherwise" Chris responded in his thick Slaughters, KY accent "Yeah, I heard that before". They both laughed.

This clip was dedicated to coal miners that have lost their lives on the job

I don't know why I don't have any Ryan Bingham.
Ryan is a pretty good friend of mine. I knew him when way back when he was playing happy hour at the River Road Ice House in New Braunfels, TX. Now he lives down the road from me in Malibu, CA.

He was just nominated for Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Satellite Awards for "The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart).

"Crazy Heart" stars Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall and opened Dec 16th 2009 in Theaters. I have not seen it yet but I look forward to it.

Smoking a Don Pepin Garcia Cuban Classic Black Label and drinking a Bashah (Black Belgian Style Double IPA, Brewed in Scotland) while listening to Old Crow Medicine Show doing an unfinished Bob Dylan song called " Wagon Wheel".

"Wagon Wheel" is a song composed of two different parts. The chorus for the song comes from a Bob Dylan outtake from the soundtrack for the film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Although never officially released, the Dylan song was released on a bootleg and is usually named after the chorus and its refrain of "Rock Me Mama." Although Dylan left the song an unfinished sketch, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show wrote verses for the song around Dylan's original chorus. Secor's additional lyrics transformed "Rock Me Mama" into "Wagon Wheel." Secor has stated the song is partially autobiographical. The song has become extremely popular since its inclusion on Old Crow Medicine Show's major label debut, O.C.M.S. in 2004, although the song appeared in earlier form on the now out of print "Troubles and Up and Down the Road" EP in 2001. The official publishing information is Dylan/Secor.

The band performed the song at the Station Inn in Nashville in 2001, as part of a series of songs commemorating Bob Dylan's 60th birthday.

The song has since been covered by numerous artists, including: Against Me!, Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, Saving Jane, Little Feat, Chris Pureka, Dylan Ortego, Like Men Who Dreamed, David McMillin, Jeremy McComb, Matt Andersen, and the Scottish band Bodega among others.

My iPod is full of Americana (also known around here as "Red Dirt" music):
"Corb Lund"
Corby is one of my best friends.

Shawn Nash (My Team Roping Partner on the Left) Corby (Middle) and Me (Right) in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Corb is very popular on the rodeo circuit. I was a fan before a friend.

Let me know when he plays your town I will get you on the guest list.

Corb just wrote the theme song for the Edmonton Oilers (His favorite hockey team) "The Oil’s Back in Town" . He's from Alberta, Canada. They play it before every home game.

He just sung "Oh Canada" at the Oilers game a couple weeks ago.

Smoking a Padilla Miami and listening to the greatest Christmas song ever written. The only year around Christmas song

REK's Merry Christmas from the Family

Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk at our Christmas party
We were drinking champagne punch and homemade eggnog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican
We didn't know what to think of him until he sang
Felis Navidad, Felis Navidad

Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
And the two identical twins from his second wife Mary Nell
Of course he brought his new wife Kay
Who talks all about AA
Chain smoking while the stereo plays Noel, Noel
The First Noel

Carve the Turkey
Turn the ball game on
It's margaritas when the eggnog's gone
Send somebody to the Quickpak Store
We need some ice and an extension chord
A can of bean dip and some Diet Rites
A box of Pampers, Marlboro Lights
Halelluja everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the family

Fred and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can't remember how I'm kin to them
But when they tried to plug their motor home in
They blew our Christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
So we all waited out on our front lawn
He threw the breaker and the lights came on
And we sang Silent Night, Silent Night, Oh Holy Night

Carve the turkey turn the ball game on
It's Bloody Mary's
Cause We All Want One!
Send somebody to the Stop 'N Go
We need some celery and a can of fake snow
A bag of lemons and some Diet Sprites
A box of Midols, some Salem Lights
Halelluja, everybody say cheese
Merry Christmas from the Family

Felis Navidad!

Does anyone here listen to Americana Music?

Here are is a link to the Americana Music Chart

Americana Music charts include many types of music, Texas Music, Red Dirt Music, Alt Country, Folk, Bluegrass and Hillbilly. Some Classic Rock and Classic Country artists are now considered Americana. Pop Country is usually loathed by Americana listens (including me).

My favorite Artists include: Robert Earl Keen, Charlie Robison, Chris Knight, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Whiskeytown and Band of Heathens

Some other Americana artists I listen too include: Bastard Sons Of Johnny Cash, Billy Joe Shaver, Bleu Edmondson, Bruce Robison, Buddy Miller, Chip Taylor and Carrie Rodriguez, Cory Morrow, Corb Lund, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Doug Moreland, Drive By Truckers, Eleven Hundred Springs, Flatlanders, Fred Eaglesmith, Frog Holler, Hackensaw Boys, Hayes Carll, old Jack Ingram, James McMurtry, Jason Boland And The Stragglers, Jim Lauderdale, Kelly Willis, Lucinda Williams, Micky and the Motorcars, Norah Jones, Old Crow Medicine Show, old Pat Green, Ralph Stanley, Randy Rogers Band, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Reckless Kelly, Ryan Adams, Ryan Bingham, Todd Snider, Townes Van Zandt, Shooter Jennings, Stoney LaRue, Todd Snider, Uncle Tupelo, Walt Wilkins, The Weary Boys, Wade Bowen, Wilco, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan.

Anyone have any American artist I missed and you would recommend?

I am not a country fan at all but I do like Charlie Robisson and Steve Earle and have seen both in concert. Both are amazing song writers. I like Charlie's biting wit and Steve Earle is not your typical country artist in that he writes about a lot of political issues. His album The Revolution Starts now was considered the first true anti-war album since the 60's by Rolling Stone.

I don't really like "Pop Country" either. I do like Americana and Bluegrass.

I love Steve Earle. He is considered the King of Americana Music. He has so many great albums. I can't watch him in concert though because of his political views. He just goes on and on and on and on and on in between songs about politics and the death penalty (which he adamantly opposes). But when you hear a song like "Ben McCullough", you can almost forgive him for being such an anti American left wing kook.

Charlie Robison is one of my favorites in concert. He 's the greatest!!! He was married to one of the Dixie Chicks for around 10 years.

Jason f'ed up by leaving the Drive-By Truckers. The DBT are one of my favorite bands. I think the Truckers were better with him in it and he will never be as great as the Truckers are. I will always give his solo stuff a listen though.

Have you seen DBT in concert? They are awesome!!!
