The steel line is to get your line down deeper. You can also buy copper line for the same reason. The pound test is right around 45lb on my steel.


I should also add that I buy my reels used off Ebay. I really want ones that are broken or at least say they don't work or have missing parts. I have not found one yet that was truly broken. I clean and rebuild them with carbon drags.

That thought never even crossed my mind. I’ve always just used braid when I need to get deep but then again your fishing wayyyyy deeper than I ever do if your trolling Lake Superior

Your outside lines are usually on small planer boards and you would like them to be deeper in the summer months. If you look at the back of the boat, you would like to have your lines like a V so the ones next to the boat are the deepest and the out side are the most shallow. This way if you get a fish you can fight it over the top of the lines and get it to the center of the wake. The small planer boards allow you to get the line away from the boat but still get down to around 40' or so with your spoons. That is the reason for steel and leadcore lines. I have used a dipsy diver with steel and hit bottom in 100' of water. It hit a couple of times until I straightened the boat and then caught me a 18lb Lake Trout. It was harder then hell to get it into the net when I was fishing all by myself. Did not really matter cause I released it any ways.

Finally got my new fishing setup ready and took it for a spin. First bass off the new SUP and then not even 10 casts later off the same lay down this slaunch donkey comes out to play that fish was an absolute unit. I don’t own a fishing scale but no doubt the biggest bass I’ve ever caught. I’d guesstimate around 7lbs

It is a bit of a pain but fits in my 5th wheel.

Lowrance depth/fish finder and a live well.
