  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Going to try my hand at the pipe

My dad has been smoking a pipe for decades, and since I'm a dad now I figure I should too. So I'm ready to take a shallow plunge to see if it's something I'll enjoy like I do cigars. So i ask you, brothers, if my idea to start off is a good one, or if I might be missing something. Here is what I'm thinking:

I'll get me a couple corn cobs, the Missouri meerschaum brand. I figure I could have one to try an aromatic, and one for non-aromatic baccys.

For the aromatic I thought the Drew Estate Central Park sounds nice.

Non-flavored in not so sure. I'm really interested in Tsuge Ryujin, but maybe that's a bad place to start. I also thought maybe Dunhill Early Morning.

Beyond that, I don't really know what else is need. Pipe cleaners and a tool, I reckon.

Any thoughts or advice for me? I'd like to avoid the newb mistakes I made when starting cigars. Thanks fellas.

I'll take you in a cigar trade, and send you a few samples of different pipe tobaccos to boot.
Always glad to help a brother out.

EDIT: better yet, pm me your Addy, and I'll send a nice sampler of different tobaccos your way, gratis. It is the holiday season, after all.
I don't do aromatics, however

Cobs are nice to start with in a way in that they are cheap and if you scorch them or decide it's not for you, you aren't out much at all. The draft holes tend to be larger though so they don't smoke like a briar typically. When you have your pipe and tobacco, don't expect to make large clouds of smoke like you do with a cigar. If you do, you're likely to get tongue bite which is just as pleasant as it sounds. Enjoy the flavors, don't stress relights, most importantly sit back and relax while you smoke.

I would also agree with @BrewinHooligan 's advice. If you find you aren't relaxed or you are stressing about any one aspect of pipe smoking you're probably doing it wrong. I love cobs and would be content only smoking from them. It sounds like @redneck_toy is going to help you out with a starter package but I would only trust this man as far as I could throw him based on the recent posts in the Baccy Pass (see signature). Another recommendation would be to look thru the "What's in you bowl today" thread and if anything jumps out at you search it on www.tobaccoreviews.com like @MattBringsSoda mentioned.

LOL, well, hey. I just want to follow the rules here. I'm not in a rush for a baccy pass. There is another guy ahead of me who is waiting in the Newbie Cigar Thread. So I don't want anyone picking me up until he gets his chance, OK? When I can arrange my first trade there, I will post in the Newbie Pipe Thread. It's not so much about getting "stuff" as it is I want to have a chance to trade, you know? I know you guys can't control yourself from blowing up mailboxes, but just take it easy for a minute or two(y)

So, send me a few sticks first if it makes you feel better.
I know getting established around here can be tough, but you already opened your mouth and let your desires be known. Lol
I already have a willing bus driver, and haven't blown anyone up in a while.
It can go one of two ways, the easy way, or the hard way. The easy way is to either pm me your addy, or if you must, send me a few sticks ( Not necessary) and I'll get a nice package out to you asap.
The hard way involves said bus driver and a tube of KY jelly. Your call.

This feels pretty cool, haven't bombed anyone in far too long, and never on the pipe side. Hehe
