I'm still a little wary of using a torch lighter on my briar....

That seems like asking for trouble to me as well
Wouldn't use a Torch on your Pipes unless it is mine LOL I only use it in a Pinch...... Unless you don't like your pipes then Torch away... This one is great for my hobbies Pipes, Cigars, RC Trucks, Car Audio and so much more. I have had it for around 17 years.
