Wow! I knew a guy that was kidnapped and forced to fight. He committed suicide last year... I have to say the use of this imagery to sell a product is down right pathetic.

Unless funds are going to free enslaved children and this is an awareness move...
Gran Habano f**ked up.

The politcally correct, will complain about everything.Art is subjective and should not be viewed as anything but art.
Don't be afraid of an image !
I agree, which is why all the child pornography & crush videos I make are labeled as "art." Hey, calm down, it's just art! You'll defend my artful freedom of expression when they arrest me, right? I suppose art is just better served with a dildo...

Not a very good analogy, since I'm assuming that the artist that painted the mural and the cigar manufacturer aren't hurting anyone. One is also highly illegal.

I'm OK with the painting. Using it to sell cigars is kind of tasteless, but we only have one side of the story. There might be a legitimate reason behind it.

I suspect you have never heard a Beatles,Who,Led Zeppelin song used in an advertisement. Art is often used as a background in many ad's,both in the print, music and video world.

Respectfully, this has absolutely nothing to do with the matter at issue. Yes, of course, art in its various form is regularly used to push products. There's not going to be any disagreement about that.

The discussion here is as to whether the image of what appears to be a child soldier is tasteful. I would think it obvious that such an image draws to mind the terrible circumstances of African civl war(s), and using such an image, albeit stylized, in association with a product, has the effect of enhancing the visibilty/memorability of the cigars. I can imagine a number of legitimate reasons why such an image might be used, but I would say that it would be a distasteful use if such image were used only for marketing purposes to make the box look "cool".

Does STK possibly stand for Save The Kids as a double meaning? I'm just guessing... maybe part of the proceeds goes to a charity.

One of the charities I support has a logo of a boy with an empty bowl, holding it out in hopes of getting some food in it. It's not flowers and swingsets, but then that wouldn't really promote an awareness of the problem.

I understand that this is merchandise, not a charity, but I can't imagine they would have done this without some kind of back story.

I'll reserve judgment for sure.

Listen, when I woke up this morning, first thing I did was take a piss. And when I took said piss, it felt like I was pissing liquid fire! The only logical conclusion here is that BOTH the artist AND the cigar manufacturer are to blame. I looked at this thread, and then bam...fire piss! So you see, someone did get hurt...my weiner!

Seriously, didn't mean to have it be a good analogy. I was just dicking around...

From an article:

For anyone who was wondering what “STK” stands for – you will have to continue to wait. Mr. Rico said that it was something close and personal to him, much like the retailers who support the industry, and he would like to keep the meaning of “STK” to himself.

I have zero clue as to why you think that the above has anything to do with this. Further, not to beat around the bush, why are your only two posts on this forum in this thread? With a join date of today?

Another Rico quote:

"[W]e created a small portfolio of accounts that are going to carry a line of cigars under the 'STK Studios' banner, our design studios, to bring in younger people. It will be more cutting edge in our marketing. All of our different unique and limited edition cigars will be coming out of there. We're going to be doing two limited edition cigars per year, about 1,000 to 2,000 boxes and once they're gone, they're gone."

Another website puffingcigars.com (nothing to do with a forum by a similar name) quoted a email from Gran Habano. By the way this was back in May of 2010.

“In addition to the Azteca cigar Gran Habano is preparing to launch the STK (Black Label) accounts for a limited number of retailers. This program was intended to further support the brick and mortar stores of which you have spent a great deal of time and effort to grow. Our STK (Black Label) program will allow retailers to receive many of our unreleased and very limited production cigars that we have kept in our aging room over the years. A new release will be sent out once every six (6) months with a unique presentation that will be a departure from our standard packaging.

Our first release in the STK (Black Label) line can best be described as a variant to the ever so popular #5 cigar. It will receive a very special wrapper, of which the details will not be revealed, and a tweak to the blend to compliment the major change. This specific cigar was created only for the Rico family (a personal family blend) to enjoy while working on the farm or in the factory. It has never been imported or shared with anyone outside of Gran Habano company. “

Charity, I don't think so. Just a way to market "limited production cigars".

Look its Gran Habano's product, they can market them anyway they want to, it is a free country and they are not breaking the law with that picture/painting. If somebody doesn't like it than it is their right to voice whatever they want and not buy it because of it. This is not the first bad choice of marketing a cigar company has made, anybody remember the big ordeal about the Illusione both at IPCPR a couple years ago?

Me myself, I won't be buying any or smoking any, but it's not just because of the marketing.

Just to play devils' advocate here... but how are you able to determine the representative age of whomever that is in that relatively abstract representation?

Thin features, especially at the lower arm, sure lead me to think that it's representative of a child, as well as the relative size of the weapon.
