All the recent gun threads keep me wanting to get my own handgun for personal safety. My wife is anti-guns in the house because of fear of kids getting them etc. I live in a pretty safe area and 2 of my neighbors are cops so I've never really felt the NEED to get one. However, with my 2nd kid on the way any day now, I keep having the urge of wanting one for house protection.

So my question is... could a handgun be kept in a cabinet humidor safely with no ill effects from the constant humidity etc? I will have a lock on my humidor so I can feel comfortable people/kids can't get to my gun so I think the timing is right. But I'm not sure if the quality of the gun will be okay if left in a humidor over time...

Thoughts/advice?

I can't see why 65% humidity would be that terrible as long as you keep it oiled/cleaned/etc. There are lots of places in the world where that level of humidity is normal and firearms still function. :) Will probably just require an elevated level of care.

It's just humidity, not a pressure washer full of salt water. Should be ok, but just because you can doesn't make it a good idea. Actually a very bad idea since the gun lube will flavor the cigars and stain the cedar. You'd also have to meticulously clean the pistol inside and out after every range trip or pretty soon all your cigars will taste like lead and cordite.

Also, in a home defense situation, are you going to be able to run to your humi and unlock it in time to protect your family? Just buy a small gunsafe and hide it in a pile of porno mags under the bed.

Thanks, that's the kind of info I'm looking for.

My cabinet humidor will literally be right next to my bed. Unfortunately that's the only/best place for it to go. So yes, that would be the best place for my gun if/when an intruder breaks in and that's why I was thinking of putting it in there. But you just made my decision easy... LOL

I would also have to assume the gun oil would begin to infuse the cigars. 65% humidity may not be much but I've got to imagine it would cause rust issues over time. People put dehumidifiers in their safes for a reason.

They make some really cool "easy access" safes that will sit by your bed or nightstand. I'd look into those.

I don't much about guns but couldn't you just put it in a ziplock?

Pretty much this.
There's lots of easy access safes that fit in convenient places. Even long ones that fit under your bed for shotguns or rifles.

What about on top of your humidor?

I would not put a gun in the humidor by it self. If you have a case that you could put it in like a pelican case for handguns it would be fine to put in there.

Something like this http://www.casesbypelican.com/app-1200.htm. Then it would be find. You would not have the smell transfer to the cigars and you would not have the humidity transfer to the gun.

you could always go for something like this

http://www.gunvault.com/gv1000c-dlx.html

there is also a $20 cheaper model with less frills and a +300 model with fingerprint scanning. I hear good things about the brand. Plus they give a HEFTY discount to Military. Thats the kind of companies i like to support.

I will throw my vote in with the rest. you could store a gun in a humidor, but the oil and cleaner scents will be bad for your cigars

Also, having a ziplock bag over the gun seems like a counterproductive idea. If I need it in a hurry, I would want the gun to be obstruction free.

Just an FYI, most good gun safe's come with a DE-humidification system. So humid is not ideal, but as others have pointed out, as long as you keep it well maintained it will be fine.

It's always threads like these where I'm enlightened to the vast differences between our countries. You guys think of hiding a gun in your humi to protect your house - I think of hiding a gun in my humi to protect my humi....

A lot of guys might think twice about reaching for certain sticks if they saw a firearm case on the top shelf... :hammersma

I wouldn't put a firearm in a humidor, for all of the above listed reasons... Hoppes #9 cigar...mmmmmmm.

But, they make very low priced single pistol sized easy access safes that may be mounted anywhere, under your bed, wall, top of the humi, anywhere. This would be much better for your cigars as well as your firearm, not to mention much easier/quicker to get in a high stress situation.
