  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

How about a beer with that cigar?

I don't know about you, but I love a great beer with my fine cigar. There are so many great beers out there, but the beers I want to discuss are the premiums.

I don't think I am going out on a limb when I say I do not believe there is a beer worth $100.00 a bottle or more, but I have not tasted any of the "Extreme Beers". I guess I have spent $100.00+ on a bottle of single malt Scotch, but I don't drink a bottle of single malt in one sitting.

One of the most expensive beers is the Samuel Adams’ Utopias 2009 with a MSRP of $179.00 per 750ml bottle. The beer is 27% ABV. If anyone has tried this stuff let me know.

I have tried many of the beers that go for as much as $40.00 per bottle. My favorite is called "The Angel's Share" by "The Lost Abby". It goes for around $34.99 per 750ml bottle. The Angel’s Share is a barrel aged ale. It is aged in oak bourbon barrels for no less than 12 months. You can tastes Caramel, molasses, chocolate milk, vanilla, toffee, prunes and raisins. The beer is 12.5% ABV, so you can taste some alcohol, but it is not over powering.

I had planned on having a bottle of the Angel's Share today, but someone at my specialty beer shop recommended a beer called "The Abyss - 2009 Reserve" by "Deschutes Brewery" and I am glad they did.

"The Abyss" is a very smooth stout brewed with licorice and molasses with 33% of each bottle aged in oak and oak bourbon barrels. This stuff is incredible. Beer Advocate ranked this one the 4th best beer in the world. The price is a mere $13.99 per 1 pint 6 once bottle and is 11% ABV. It went great with my Casa Magna today.

I bought 2 bottles, one cold and one out of the case. This beer is meant to age. I will keep the unopened bottle upright in a cool dark place till this time next year.

Have you had any great beer experiences lately? :ccowboy:

Wow, never heard of that one, I'm a big fan of Deschutes though so I'll have to look for it. They also make a barleywine called Mirror Mirror that is good for aging as well.

I'm drinking a Murphy's at the moment and it's my new favorite stout. On the hoppier side of things I had Green Flash's barleywine yesterday (for the third or fourth time) and it has consistently impressed me.

mmmm beer. I have a beer or two almost every night with my cigar. I love IPA's. I drink my own brew most of the time but when I buy beer I stick to brands like Dogfish Head, Terrapin, Avery, Fort Collins, and Breckenridge. Corsendonk pale ale is a great Belgian and the one I spend the most money on... around $12 a 22 oz. bottle. Dogfish head 120 minute IPA is up there though at around $9 a 12 oz. bottle (20% ABV). Besides IPA's some of the most flavorful beers I've had were Breckenridge Vanilla Porter and Dogfish Heads Midas Touch. Grab em if you see em!

Cheers!

I too love IPA',s but hate IPA's w/ a cigar. The bitterness of the IPA doesn't go much w/ a cigar for me. I like maltier beers w/ cigars, or a Belgium Ale. :santa: My favorite IPA is probably Lagunitas IPA. Favorite Belgium Ale is either Delirium Tremens or Duvel.

My current favorite beer is the Yeti Chocoloate Oak Aged Imperial Stout by Great Divide. It's fairly easy to obtain and is brewed with oak chips, chocolate nibs and cayenne pepper! OM NOM NOM NOM!

The most expensive stuff I've had is the Ola Dubh 30 year which runs about $15 per 12oz bottle. Yeah, it's very pricey BUT if you love scotch and Russian imperials stouts, this is the bees knees. They take an already great beer (Old Engine Oil) and then age it in a Highland Park cask that once held their 30 year old scotch. This is a really phenomenal beer.

I've also got an un-opened bottle of Old Rasputin XII from North Coast Brewery. The difference here between this and normal Old Rasputin is that its aged in a bourbon cask for about a year. Never had this one before, gonna crack it on New Year's Eve!

I'm really missing Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale. I love this stuff and it's sold out around me, sadly. I should have bought a case or two, I knew it! I have to check out more Binny's, they had it on sale for $7.99 a 4 pack, awesome stuff! It went great w/ cigars, IMO. Especially Tat browns.

Glad to see there are some other beer geeks om the board. I heard the utopias is recommended to be served at room temperature in a 2 ounce pour in a sifter. Since the beer is not meant to be consumed in one sitting perhaps the MSRP is not the unreasonable. My specialty beer store as a few bottles in stock. The hard part is having the will power to let that age two to five years.

Great feed back so far keep it coming. :ccowboy:

I have been to Deschutes Brewery's Public House in Bend, OR. They sure do love their beer up their in Bend. Dechutes is famous for there Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Obsidian Stout and Inversion IPA.

In addition to the Special Reserve Mirror Mirror, they also have a Reserve, Black Butte XXI, tribute to Black Butte Porter. Since I am a big fan of the Black Butte, I really want to try the XXI. It is 11% ABV and some of the Dechutes suggested pairings are Flank Steak and Chimichurri Sauce, Crème Brulée, Cherries Jubilee and Strong Bleu Cheeses. Of course, I think many of us on this site might want to pair it with a Maduro with a wrapper as dark as the beer itself. Delicious!

Re: Murphy's Irish Stout is an old favorite of mine too.

Wow, I'm nowhere near that level of beer enjoyment. I'm just a diehard Sierra Nevada fan...torpedo, celebration, bigfoot.

Ive been getting more into beer with my new kegerator(shocker) right now on tap I have Victory Hop Devil, delicious. I would still like some more feedback on what I should get next. Over the holiday I was able to ENJOY a Troegs Java Head Stoudt, that beer was awesome and would totally compliment a cigar.

I enjoy many different quality beers, ales, and stouts.
I also homebrew so I can make it taste the way I want it!
I enjoy a lot of abbey ales IPA's
my last batch was a clone of the DFH 120 IPA
That was an awesome IPA and very hoppy in taste.
My next batch is going to be a scottish ale like the bellhaven scottish ale.

Unfortunately, with greatness comes scarcity. Most of those beers are impossible to find unless you REALLY know your way around the market. I would probably donate one of my appendages for a chance to try that Kentucky Breakfast Stout. The normal Breakfast Stout is phenomenal...
