Clipping the cap before storing will speed up the changes/equilibrium for stuff you are eager to burn. Resting a least a month is good practice,

Got some just a couple days ago I'm having a very hard time not smoking one.

I typically do wait about a month, but do often smoke just one rott as I'm a child and can't resist if its something particularly good. Haven't had any issues or noticable differences doing so

put the cigars and the hydrometer in a ziplock bag and close it. Leave them for 12 hours.

leave the box out of the equation..

isolation is the only way to get an accurate reading.
