I am confused by those who picked up a rum taste. I never got that....but who knows.
Those barrels have not had rum in em for many many years, decades even. They have been used for filler and binder for the top end La Aurora smokes...ie preferido, cien anos etc. The difference with the barrel aged is that they are putting the wrapper in the barrel as well. We have seen the barrels and all you smell is the tobacco. The purpose of the barrel is not to impart any taste, but rather provide a slow cooking area for the fermentation...kinda like a tercio.
