Meerschaum Pipe Question

Several years ago, I was given two of my grandfather's (unsmoked) pipes. One was a Longchamp billiard and the other a meerschaum bent billiard. Well, long story short, I finally decided to smoke out of the meerschaum. But I noticed that the stem was quite loose. After I had finished the smoke, I pulled out the stem and saw the sleeve (forgive me for not remembering the correct term) that the tennon slides into is cracked. How am I to repair this?

Pictures coming soon.

get DETAILED pix, if possible. there are a lot of different ways used to join the stem on a meer, and WHAT it is made of, and HOW it joins, are going to matter to you. and us, if we can help.

also pix of both pipes. because pipe porn. o)

i would actually suggest it is BOTH push and screw (and please, this is a straight line, take your opportunities). i have two i thought were screw together, but while working on them, found out the ends separated with a push style tenon. that is, one side is each attached to the stem and the shank via a teflon screw, THEN connect through the push bit.

which is to say, have you tried taking needle nose pliers and VERY GENTLY unscrewing the attachment to the stem?

to clarify, VERY VERY gently. meer are not so delicate as some believe, but you can screw them up, and it's your grandfather's pipe.

Holy guacamole! It screwed out! I had never even considered the possibility. And it unscrewed super easily. Could I glue this guy back together?

holy guacamole! i got one right? o)

gluing could be the easiest thing to do. or could cause complications down the line. but i think you have enough info that grrrr or another gentleman (loose usage of the term) should be able to step in.

also, nice meer, and i hope you will enjoy the hell out of it!

How about making a temporary repair with teflon tape?

I always use the term gentleman loosely. This isn't Gentlemen of the Leaf, it would be a very boring place if it were, lol!

as long as we are on the subject of meers...

anybody got a recommendation on where to pick up a replacement stem (or two) for this one? the stem and tenon appear different from what I have seen in other meers..

I cracked the bit on this pipe probably 3-4 years ago.. and have never gotten around to replacing it... its a cheapie meer.. and has been a "project pipe" (I've done some experimentation with it with a dremel, buffing wheel, buffing compounds, etc.. its now UgLy as shit...and only smokes marginally well..)... but holds some sentimental value.. I'd like to get it smoking again...

I know you don't want a new stem but for 13 plus 2 in shipping in USA you can get a new stem and tenon for the pipe. Keep it as a back up or pass the stem on. But 13 not to bad. 25 for a chruchwarden style. Royal Meerschaum they even have replacement for Mini as well. Just an Idea.

Actually, that looks pretty nice! I think the brown stem would look better than the yellow one it came with. Not a bad price either.
