BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

myself, i do NOT roast. i excuse myself that i work too much, have a teeny kitchen, et al., but in reality am just a slack bastich. o)
i buy whole, roasted bean, grind immediately before consumption, and prepair 85% of my coffee through drip method, although i do have 5 other preperation methods available, time allowing: french press, ibrik (little pot with a handle for turkish/ greek style coffee), moka pot (stove top espresso), pour over, and now finally an aeropress..
and i am going to be cupping my sample today, thank you very much. o)

pre-cup: the bean taste (yes i eat them!) was toasty coffee with a weird vegetal almost green pepper thing, NOT my favorite bean to eat. the bean smell whole was just toasty coffee, no surprises. the ground smell had caramelized coffee and some mulched earth (light), a little woodiness and some faint vegetal undertones.
preperation: pour over method, 36g coffee, 520g water, just short of a very soft boil, 60sec to bloom the cup, 2:45 to pour the water over.
ACTUAL CUP: aroma of cinnamon and faint underripe plum with a syruppy oiliness (agitated the cup with a stir to disperse aroma). very light sheen to the surface, and dark amber color on the edge of the meniscus rising up the cup; nice legs for something brewed through a paper filter, speaks of good oils.
first spray hit center palate with big black pepper (odd, i know), dissapating across the palate with a rich bittersweet oiliness. some kinda hint of peca showed it head. muted black cherry acidity.
as the cup cools, black pepper and cinnamon tie in with the viscous semisweet to lie heavy but well on the palate. at the half way mark the woodiness and green pepper funk say hi agin, poorly, but only momentarily.
SUMMARY: this was NOT the best cup i have had in a while, but it is WELL above average, and i would easily consider this for daily consumption. were this blind, i would give it like 75-80%, with 100 for me being "i will drive across a time zone to get it" and 50 being the point where i would rather have decaff (below 30 would have me swinging fisticuffs!). knowing the scenario, i judge this to be a decent bean on it's own merit, and if you had access to a roaster (as my sample was under a week roasted) it could hit the lower reaches of excellence.

My wife and I did several cups each, every day since it's arrival...
The "long" evaluation of the coffee has already been posted....
The short version, after consuming many cups over multiple days... is... while this is not the best coffee I have ever drank, I think it was actually very good... I enjoyed it far more than my "standard" cup that I drink most mornings.... Paul newmans extra bold... K cup... Prepared in my kureig...

Just picked up the beans from the mailbox today. I was out of town so I'm sure they were there earlier. I will be posting my findings shortly. Probably tomorrow. Big shout out to MDWEST and TheJavaMan for doing this!

I just talked to my guy that lives about an hour outside of Nairobi earlier today.. He is picking up some green beans for me when he goes home in late February... And will have them waiting for me when I get to Juba again in March....

Good Kenyan coffees have unmistakable black currant notes & screamingly bright acidity. Their auction system for their best green coffees is world class as well. Definitely an acquired taste - almost like the scotch of the coffee world.

Suburban robot that monitors reality -BOM Feb.'13
Had my first taste yesterday. Really enjoyed the flavor but was a little stymied by the aftertaste. It may just be because of this cold/flu that I have been fighting for most of the week though. Being very new to this it's almost impossible to pin specifics down. I'm going to do a little more research into the correct review criteria and try and get something posted on Monday or Tuesday.I like the pics and write up jj... good stuff there...
whose next? I know you guys got your coffee... start drinking!

dude, the review is just format, just framework! you already do this with cigars! just stop, think about what you are tasting, smelling, feeling, put it in a context of past experiences of other sense memories, and roll it off stream of consciousness style. this is NOT a pro review (despite the fact that kev actually qualifies), this is a peer review. relax, have a cup, think about what you like and don't like, and tell us.
