  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I bough 5 pipes this week, 3 of them in the 30-40 range and two cobs. Needless to say I pitched the cobs. The other three seem to be so so. They have these little filters in them, is this common for all pipes? Pros? Cons?

Yeah, filters are pretty common. Some people use them others don't. They are really more for moisture but just keep a pipe cleaner handy to stick down the stem and you'll be fine when you get a gurgle. I personally hate them.

Also I notice I have to smoke kinda fast to keep it going but it gets to hot as well. An I get a little tongue bite.i guess I expect I want the smoke output of a cigar, is that realistic?

No it really isn't. The goal of a pipe is completely different. The most flavor comes from your pipe when you are just barely kindling the tobacco. What you want is the least amount of heat and just the slightest bit of smoke. That is when the real flavors pop IMO. Try taking small natural puffs as you breathe. Try to use the natural vacuum of your breathe.

I promise it will take so much time to learn the art of the pipe but the rewards are ten fold. Btw - Aromatic tobacco tends to have bite also any baccy that is moist and it could be from puffing to fast.
You will learn that you have to smoke almost every blend different. Its odd but it's almost an art looking at the tobacco and then figuring how you want yo go about smoking it.

Pitch the filters they become sour and nasty smelling really fast. As you get better at packing you will find that the pipe stays lit longer.

Also your baccy may be too moist, give it the pinch test, pinch some between your forefinger and thumb. They place it in the palm of your hand , if it stays in a clump its too moist, place some spread out on a plate for at least 30 minutes to overnight. If it kinds of uncoils itself and springs up, its just right. If it crackles and breaks like dry leaves its too dry, put it in a bowl covered with a damp cloth to rehydrate.

I never thought about using pipe cleaner to soak up the gurgle, Duh. I've always covered the bowl with my thumb and gave it a firm shake. Works great as long as you have a firm hold on the pipe... they don't bounce very good.
