Sooo... its looking like there is a good bit of interest in this.. and that there is a strong possibility of people traveling to get here...
what do you guys think about this...
just checked the regulations at Smoky Mountain National Park.. other than inside historic structures and federal buildings (neither of which we would use) smoking in the park is not a problem...
they even revised their policy on CCW in 2010 and allow permit holders to "carry" in the park (some of our interested parties are avid CCW guys )...
There are several pic-nic, family meeting type areas in the park.. some of them are outright beautiful.. many provide overhead cover, tables, etc..
And.. for those traveling.. there is a ton of stuff to do before and after the HERF in the surrounding area if you are so inclined.. there is a decent cigar shop in Gatlinburg (closest town).. lots of touristy stuff in Gburg and in Pidgeon Forge.. ranging from a nice aquarium to go-carts, to a large amusement park, etc.. or if youre into "the outdoors", the Appalachian Trail runs right through the park.. go hike a few miles of it.. or there are several summits with extremely nice views of the surrounding area, etc..etc..
The "HERF" part would remain "free".. I could go down there next weekend and scout out which part of the park would best support our needs (most overhead cover, shade, picnic tables, grills, etc.. nice views..).... and then the day of the HERF I could go down early in the morning (would need to in order to have time to smoke all the meats, etc..) and secure us plenty of table space and cover...
We'd probably want the "locals" (or reasonably local folk) to bring a few chairs.. but.. Ive got probably a half dozen I could bring.. and there would be pic nic tables.. etc... I can also bring plenty of ash trays, garbage bags, etc.. and a truck to haul all of our mess out of there when we are done..
One downside to the national park... the consumption of alcohol is prohibited inside the park... FOR ME this isnt all that big a deal.. my guess is we'd all be looking at arriving sometime before noon.. and hanging through both the lunch and dinner hours.. eating copious amounts protein.. and smoking... with only a minimal amount of drinking going on until the later hours anyway (if we were somewhere else)..... If we choose to do the park, once we finished up there, there are plenty of places to go to consume booze for those that are inclined.. lots of bars in the area.. plenty of liquor stores, etc.. hell.. if youre willing to make the drive, we can all saddle up and you can follow me back to Knoxville and we can drink in the back yard with the dogs until the sun comes up... Im totally open...
but.. if its a big deal to others.. or a major inconvenience.. I completely understand.. and we can look at other locations/possibilities..
So, with all of that said, does Smoky Mountain National Park (about 45 mins south east of Knoxville.. in the vicinity of Gatlinburg) sound for a meeting location?
I checked into a giant cabin rental.. but we're getting too close to "season" and the cost is astronomical.. Im thinking we'd be better off going the "free" route in the park.. and anyone that needs a hotel room, I can see if I can tap some resources and get individual discounts in the surrounding area (you might want to stay around the park.. or come back to Knoxville, etc..)...
