  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

i would have to say that the ability to judge a cigar by only smoking the first quarter of it is the most ludicrous thing i've ever heard.
CA only smokes the first 1/4 of a cigar for their ratings also. Below is a quote from Gordon Mott

I have said openly that we smoke between half an inch to an inch of each cigar. I've had manufacturers rake me over the coals for that fact, and for the fact that we don't "smoke a whole box" to get the true nature of their product. I remind them that they are a consumer product manufacturer. If you say to me that you have to smoke half of a cigar to "get to the good part," I have a problem with that. If you light up a cigar, and it tastes like shit, not only for the first five minutes but for a good 30 minutes before you get half way down, the majority of people will simply put it out, and never come back. And if they smoke a whole box, and don't like half of the cigars in it, they won't be buying that brand again. We didn't just arbitrarily chose the half-inch to an inch limit, although Andy is right; there is a simple logistical imperative that comes into play. But after many hours of talking with cigar people, and I hope mastering some of the intricacies of what makes a handrolled cigar function, nearly everyone talks about a point where a cigar gets "running." It's usually after that first-half inch. By then, you will in 99 percent of the cases, know the true nature of the cigar; you certainly will a perfect idea of draw and burn, most flavor components, and whether or not you like it.

well i've never been too fond of ca's reviews, so that just reenforces my opinion of them. but hey, they're the experts. i don't get to travel the world and play golf with pros and drink fine wine. i've just smoked cigars for 30 years!
as my dear departed daddy used to tell me, "son, some people's taste is all in their mouth."

So. If you want to get a high rating in CA or Robb Report, just make the first inch of the cigar spectacular and the rest of the cigar can go to hell. "Rollers. Concentrate on the first inch of the cigar. We don't care about the other 6 inches of this churchill."

Okay, although I agree with the condemnation of their method... Have any of you smoked a Black Dragon?

...personally, I thought it was a truly fantastic cigar!!

Flame on...
Good comment.

Personally I love most Gurkha cigars, IMO of the many blends I have smoke the black dragon wasn't the best of them but it was good. I have only smoked one black dragon.
