  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So with the help of watching all the awesome work that some of the vets around here do in the pipe restoration world (among other really talented things) I have been secretly trying my hand at pipe restoration with the hope of restoring a few of my great grandfathers pipes eventually. Well that day has come and I just finished those two pipes! And since my Secret Santa also sent me a pipe to finish a resto on I figured I better start posting pics and talking about it. So here goes ....

This is the restoration that I finished up on My Secret Santa pipe.

Reamed the bowl a little bit and gave her two salt treatments. Put the stem in an OxyClean bath then Mr Clean Magic Eraser for oxidation. Then sanded it with some finishing wool. Reassembled and then hit the bench polisher with white diamond then a coat of carnuba. Thanks again Santa this pipe is sweet!

This little guy was an FleaBay find. It's a quite small Dr Grabow Duke. I mainly wanted to restore it to test out saving the stamping on the stem but through the process kinda fell in love with this pipe. Bowl reamed, salt treatment, OxyClean bath for stem and Mr Clean Magic eraser. Then worked it over with 250 - finishing wool. Reassembles with some beeswax on the tennon to fix a tight fit then on to the buffing wheels with white diamond and carnuba. All in all very surprised how much I'm drawn to this little guy.

So this is the first of two pipes that made me want to learn more about restoration and eventually get kicked down the pipe slope and the resto slope. It's one of two pipes that my Mom gave me while she and my Dad attempt to clean out 65 years worth of "stuff" they have amassed. She said that they belonged to my great grandfather and figured I might be able to do something with them. Here is the first one.

Bowl reamed and two salt treatments. OxyClean bath and Magic Eraser for oxidation. Sanded with finishing wool then off to the wheels. The small gap between the stem and bowl has since been taken care of with beeswax.

This is the second of my Great Grandfathers pipes. Really happy with the way this one came out. Thanks to everyone here who has helped and pushed to get me to this point. I really enjoy restoring pipes and am going to continue doing so. Eventually I'd also like to try my hand at making pipes as well. You all rock! Now here's the last pipe for today ...
