  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

If kept in the tin containers the tobbaco comes in, how long will it keep without going bad? shelf life? what about if it is transfered to glass jars with good seals? what is the best way to keep baccy for long storage?

I typically just keep it in the tin until I crack the seal... Then transfer to either a ziplock if its something I smoke regularly and will go through somewhat quickly.. Or to a glass jar if its something that's going to be around for a while...

No clue what the max shelf life is... But I've kept tins for over a year before I ever broke the seal.. And have never had a problem..

I live in the south east though... RH gets into the high 80s here in the summer.. And rarely gets below the high 30's in the winter..

My bigger challenge is getting pipe tobacco to dry out enough to smoke well this time of year... I never worry about loosing a tin because it got too dry or wasnt sealed up well...

i haven't been in this game too long, but from what i have read and researched, TINS, being the little round puck jobbies, should be cellarable. the square ones have been known to fail, so do a back up baggie. if you wanted to be paranoid, vacuum seal the closed intact tin. as far as the cans, being more cylindrical lined cardboard capped with metal, most are cellarable, but some have been known to fail. YMMV.

as far as jars, a bell type jar with a silicone seal will last. period. rubber gaskets can, but will not always, fail, but silicone seems to hold for the long haul.

by storage, what kind of time frame we talking? weeks? months? years? or decades?

I am ordering from a company on line and since I am paying for shipping and I am a cheapo, I was thinking about ordering several tins, but probably wont get them smoked in a year or two. I just didnt want to stock up and then have it go bad in 2 years if I dont get to it. Cigars are my main smoke, but I enjoy a pipe sometimes when sitting on the porch in the evening. In the winter my smoking goes way down since I dont smoke in my house or truck. I may have to build a smokein' house like I saw in that one post... :) I can hear the wife now:(

I've opened 5+ year old tins with no loss of seal. If I don't smoke it within a week or so I'll put the remainder in a mason jar.

Some guys store bulk tobacco in mason jars sealed with wax for extra protection and have reported no loss in freshness after years in storage. Do a search on cellaring pipe tobacco lots of good information out their.

This is a great question! I have also wondered the same thing getting samplers in plastic baggies. I have kept them in these tupperware containers but have noticed that the tobacco was getting dry. I grabbed a cooler and glass canning gars to combat the issue. I think the cooler will seal the way I want to store the tobacco without loosing the moisture. Atleast I hope so.

From what i have studied on the all knowing interwebs, once you crack a tin you have about 1-2 weeks to use it if not throw it in a clean unused mason jar. You can store tins indefinitely, they had some 40 year old tins at the chicago pipe show that everyone said was wonderful. In mason jars you can also store it almost indefinitely as long as you didn't have any bacteria or mold spores in the jar or air when you put it in. The biggest reason for moving it from the tin once opened is that just like pulling a steak from the freezer once you expose it to air you stop the aging and risk drying out and also bacteria growth. if you want more articles that you could ever read i recomend pipesmagazine.com i think the people on our forums are better though.

I keep all my tobacco that come in tins tinned till I open them, then when I do open the tin and after smoking a few bowls, I make the decision on how I am going to store it. If its good right then and there, I will jar up the tin and it is placed in the good to go cabinet. If I think it needs some more time, I will split it up between 2 jars. One jar will have about 6 bowls worth in it and will go in the check this in a few months cabinet, the other jar will go in one of the waiting list boxes. After a few months I will crack open the tester jar, if its ready to go, I will pull the other jar out of the waiting list box and put it in the good to go cabinet.

You can get some small jars at wally world that are perfect for samples that you get.

One of the waiting list boxes...

Yep i use jelly sized jars. russ do you pack it down in like a cake inside the jar or do you just dump it in? Im trying to decide if packing it in there compared to loose changes any of the effects of cellaring it.
