So, I’m heading to Vegas next week and plan to bring some cigars with. Staying at the Mirage and Rhumbar is cigar friendly!!! I'm not checking a bag and was wondering if anyone has experience flying with lighters and cutters. I really don't want to have to toss my Xikar lighter and cutter at security because they aren't "approved”. Any insight would be appreciated or if anyone has had experiences positive or negative with flying with accessories.

Also, hit me with some ideas of what to do. Going with the wife so it's going to be pretty chill. Last time we went we hit Cut (amazing restaurant) and saw Love and Zoomanity. I'm sure if can talk her into Casa Fuente for a cigar if i mention the famous Mojitos. Anyone else have some gems either shows or restaurants?

I'll have to keep an eye on this thread as I too am off to Vegas next month, cannot wait!

I'm not confident about the cutter/lighter though, pretty sure butane lighters have to be in the hold and seeing as we can't even get away with a razor blade I doubt a cigar cutter will be allowed.

Great question Dave, Im interested in the answer as well for my trip to Colorado next week.

How do people fly with their cigars. Obviously in a travel humidor, but is it your "one carry on"?

This just happened to me when flying to Cali last month. I had to check my bag because I had a torch lighter. The cutter is not a problem, just can't have torch style lighters.

As far as things to do, I would check out the Cirque du Soleil shows, I have heard GREAT things about them. I've never been to Vegas, so have some fun for the rest of us.

I wouldn't bring the lighter. Last time I traveled they told me no jet lighter (butane). I did bring my cutter with no problems. I put it in the cigar travel box in my carry-on bag. As for things to do I mostly climb when I'm in Vegas so can't be much help. I have enjoyed SW Steakhouse at the Wynn a few times. Not on the strip but love the Hofbrauhaus great beer and fun times.

Stick a travel humi in your carry on. All of mine fit in my backpack.

If you want a straight cutter, bring a cheap one in case they toss it. I have punches on my keychain and have never had an issue, so that's an option if you're okay with a punch.

Lighters? Don't even bother. Buy a Ronson or a Bic when you get out there.

Dave, just going out on a limb here. But, since you appreciate well-crafted stuff like plugs, you might want to check out the Neon Sign Museum. It's pretty small, so won't take much of your time. Depending on your haggling skills and who is working the desk, you can probably get in for a discount.

I LOVED the Neon Boneyard Museum and would go again (I rarely do Vega attractions twice). You do need to make a reservation and, technically, your entry fee is a donation (keep it for taxes). Make a reservation for night. Our tour started right at dusk and, although interesting, it wasn't visually exciting until the sun went down and the lights came on.

If you have a car, I'd say go to Chinatown and hit up Lotus of Siam for some of, if not the, best Thai food in the country. And it's very reasonably priced. Last time I went my buddy and I skipped the drinks and had an appetizer and two entrees. With tax and tip we got out of there for under $40. Also, and you definitely need a car, go to The Hush Puppy for cheap but great all you can eat catfish/shrimp dinner.

If you're relegated to the Strip, then buy a couple of sticks at Casa Fuente just to say you did (and smoke them there) but prices on the Strip are double what they should be so I'd invest in a 10-15 stick travel humidor and take your own.

Just my 2¢

you wont have a problem with a cutter or your cigars.. just put them in a travel humi and throw them in your carry on bag...

TSA will not allow a torch in either a carry on or in your checked bags.... I have put them in my check bags several times though and never once had anyone call me on it.. I dont know if I would risk a $1000 ST Dupont.. but a $4 ronson torch is probably worth the risk if you absolutely must have a torch..

if not, soft flame and matches are permitted in carry ons... just throw a $0.79 bic soft flame in the travel humi along with the sticks and the cutter.. and you are good to travel...

I routinely travel with a jet lighter (XIKAR) in a TSA approved colibri (yellow egg) lighter holder in my checked bag and have never had a problem....except once in Managua, Nicaragua, where I had to explain and show what it was. I carry a XIKAR cutter in my backpack (carry-on) all the time.... never had a problem in US, but did have it confiscated in Cabo San Lucas, returning to the states...go figure.....

Had a Xikar Executive torch lighter in my carry on confiscated by TSA last year. Since then, all cigar accessories go into checked luggage. I still carry a torch lighter when I fly, but put it in a DOT approved lighter case. Never had a problem since I started carrying it. If you don’t have such a case, just buy a Bic after you get there. Easy enough to find in any hotel or casino store.

Just drop 'em in the mail to yourself at the hotel via 2-day Priority SFR a couple days before you leave. Pick 'em up at the desk when you get there.

I've never done it, but it seems like it should work...

Or take Alex's advice and just grab a ronson when you get there.

Since I occasionally have a drink or two too many on Vegas, I like The idea of leaving the expensive later at home and getting the four dollar Ronson when I get to Vegas. That way when I lose it I won't be upset.

Cutter should never be a problem I fly a lot with mine in my pocket, if it's a torch lighter you could run into an issue, I fly with a xikar soft flame so I've never had a problem, I would recommend bringing a book of matches(you can bring those)

What you want to do is retain a suite at the Bellagio at all times. You can leave your "vegas lighter" and your "vegas cutter" there, along with the walk-in humidor you have them build in your suite.

Done & done.

Yeesh. Do I really have to think of everything?

Cutters are fine for carry on as well as soft flame lighters. I usually go with a DJEEP lighter as they make a bigger flame than a bic and last forever. Torches in checked bag with a TSA case. I usually bring both and use the soft flame when Im indoors in vegas which is most of the time when smoking a cigar and torch for outdoors.

You all know as I do that soft flame lighters are allowed in carry-ons. But I did have an incident a couple of months ago, flying down to Miami, were TSA flagged my bag, fished around in it, found my lighter (a luxe gold-plated Dunhill Rollagas) and said it wasn't allowed. I was dumbfounded and asked to talk to a supervisor. The supervisor came over and said, "nope, not allowed." Fortunately, while the agent was fetching the supervisor, I'd brought up this link on my smart phone:

http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/lighters-and-matches

So when I showed that to the supervisor, off he scurried, made a phone call to someone, came back and said those three words you rarely hear government agents say. "You were right." The incident gave me pause, but I'll still travel with a decent lighter (although maybe not my best one).

Flew to Vegas in August. Carried all my cigars with me as well as a cutter. As others stated it's better to leave the lighter at home. You can get free matches from the cigarette girls walking around. I enjoyed both Casa Fuente and Rhumbar. I missed out on the Foundation Room at Mandalay. I also found out no smoking allowed at the pools and in many places you would think would be ok. Quite a few bars in the casino's will not let you smoke a cigar AT the bar-you have to go sit down somewhere else and if they serve food many places you think would be cigar friendly were not(Ri Ra Irish Pub and Red Square at Mandalay were some of them). If you want an EXCELLENT Italian meal, make a reservation and go to Nove at the Palms. Spectacular views of the city and great food. I know you can also smoke cigars up on the roof of the Rio at Voodoo and at Ghostbar at the Palms. At least on the night we went, Rhumbar seemed kinda dead--it's definitely not a dance club if you are looking for that. There were plenty of places to sit which was nice but not much going on that night.

SW at the Wynn is the 2nd best steakhouse I have ever been to after Prime 112 in South Beach. Also, Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse at Mandalay is really good from what I've heard, and has a rooftop patio for cigar smokers. Charlie is a big cigar smoker.

Best two places to buy cigars on the strip are Casa Fuente and Davidoff at Venetian. Davidoff is only 20-30% higher than here in Florida, so the pricing isn't too bad. Rhumbar doesn't have much a selection, but atmosphere is nice. My favorite place to have a cigar outside of Casa Fuente is the Bellagio sports book.

Don't bother with a torch lighter or bic, just bring or get matches from a store.
