It strengthens the connection between bowl & stem. Also allows the stem to be removed immediately after smoking. It also looks real cool. Why so much metal between the stem & bowl?
What pipe is that on the bottom?

Balkan Beauty in a Scott Klein
It’s taken me almost all year ( I started smoking pipe tobaccos this past January) to fully grasp the idea that I’m packing my bowl too tightly. Now things seem to be going the way it should for me. Not saying that’s what the issue may be but it surely has made a difference for me. It’s a journey. Remember to be patient with yourself and trust me, there are a LOT of great blends and flavors to be discovered along the way.First pipe smoke ever thanks to @StogieNinja for being so generous and bombing me the supplies to get started. I watched a few tutorial videos including one that @bostoneo was kind enough to link to in chat. My first pipe smoke ever was a McClellan Full Balkan from 2005. I had a lot of problems with this, about 8 or 9 re-lights and it seemed like I needed to be constantly puffing on the pipe to keep it anywhere near lit. My guess is that A: I don't know what I'm doing and B: Tobacco was probably too wet. Thoughts?
The smell of this tobacco was intoxicating though, I will keep trying until I figure this pipe thing out. I do not give up easy
If can tell if the tobacco is to wet if it.. feels wet... or you squeeze a packet of it b/t your fingers and it springs back very slowly. The idea is to pack your bowl right, get that first light going, let it go out and tamp down softly to create an even disk of ash on the top which helps with the draw. This fellow has a nice video tutorial on pipe smoking, think 10 videos on the series, probably start off at 5 though.First pipe smoke ever thanks to @StogieNinja for being so generous and bombing me the supplies to get started.
