BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.
Which Motor Oil Do You Use / How Frequently Do You Change It?

A petroleum engineer told me that the synthetic oil that most people drop during an oil change is better than new dino oil. I have used synthetic blend and full synthetic for years.
I decide to try an experiment. Once our '07 past warranty I quit changing oil. I replace the filter every 5K and top it off with new oil. The car now has 95K on it. It uses no oil. I am going to do a complete change at 100K and keep on driving.
btw - I use 5w-30 Amsoil.

Interesting. How many miles did it have on it when you started this experiment?
I started at 50K. I am now at 100K.
I use all synthetic on my 08 five series every 7500 miles. I'm at 115k now and the engine still purrs like a kitten.
I am about to put another set of brakes/rotors/brake sensors on that baby though, which is never cheap.

Fully synthetic as my BMW 328I will attest to. 138,000 miles and has had oil changes every 15K miles and my mechanic tells me it's just now broken in and comparable to a car with 25K miles on it. The oil may cost a bit more but my car runs like new...no compression change..goes through the gears like it was just broken in and it looks like showroom. I believe that if you put the right "blood" in your car it will serve you well and I'll drive my BMW well over 200,000 miles easily and at that rate the car has paid for itself twice. I bought it in 1999 and with it being 15 years old everybody thinks it's only a few years old.
Ive found hd truck oil works very well in my track cars. Mobil 1 Delvac has been my go to for a while.
My daily drivers get whatever conventional is on sale, in manufacturers weight recommendations. Around 4 months usually, dont care about miles. More miles in 4 months means low load highway miles. Ill change the oil in my truck right before towing long distance, so sometimes sooner.
I buy beaters. Most ive spent on a car is $1000. Usually pull another 100,000 miles from them before they're beyond repair. My current truck is a 99 Dakota with about 280k and its almost done for. Rust has taken out most of the body and im just waiting for a suspension mount or part of the frame to give in to rust. Still runs fine, haven't done much to it.

Wow, and here I am using conventional 5W-20 and changing it every 3,000 miles on my '08 Rav4. 180k+ and never had a single problem, but you folks now have me thinking about synthetic, and going longer between changes.
I may be biased, being an AMSOIL dealer, but, everything I own, from weed eaters and mowers, to my RV all have AMSOIL. Been a dealer for 6 years. Increased fuel mileage(although sometimes minor) cooler operating temps and fewer breakdowns since. We use AMSOIL in my son's race bike. We tore the motor down after a season of Hare Scrambles. Engine is as clean as can be. I have sat here reading every single post on this tread. I will not argue about brands, but being in the business, I can tell you there are huge differences between brands and their quality. Not all oils are created equal. AMSOIL was the first to have a certified full synthetic motor oil. Most of the so called synthetics on the market today are not what they claim. I am also a shop owner and ASE certified auto technician for over 20 years.
And, extended drain intervals of 25,000 miles or 1 year, helps a lot. Most AMSOIL filters are rated for 25,000 miles or 1 year as well. The exceptions are the smaller import and domestic filters that are rated at 15,000 miles.
I get a lot of windshield time. Picked up a brand new '15 Tacoma a few months ago that I've already got 16k miles on. One of the selling points was free oil changes for life AND the engine is warrantied for life (by the dealer) as long as I don't miss a service.
I've got a 350k mile target on this sucker, minimum. I don't care if they put peanut butter in there. It's their problem. All I have to do is show up every 5k miles and let them have it for an hour.
