Holy crap... I didn't realize that and have had no problems so far. Washington State sucks ass... this is just another ploy of the Liquor Control Board to fatten their wallets! We can only buy liquor from state controlled liquor stores at HIGH prices, now they are gearing towards doing the same with tobacco!?! How the F*@k can this be legal???

I was told this by a random vendor at one time too. The majority of vendors have never said anything about it however.

BTW, where are you (and Alohastyle) located?

States have a high degree of autonomy when it comes to laws. Though most don't use it that much, what WA is doing is legal unless the US Supreme Court says it's unconstitutional. Technically, if a State in the Union wants to act more-or-less like a Socialist state (as WA is approaching), that is legal because--presumably--that's what the people of the state have voted for.

I agree, of course, that it's insane.

This is indeed a shitty deal. I was talking to someone about this and he said he was having a tobacco retailer order things from him online so he could buy from whomever he wanted but he knows the owner.

Rediculous and nothing less!!

I know technically it's legal and you give a good explanation, but I'm just pissed and think it's total BS. I think it's crazy how 50 states can have such different laws in the same country. We should have equal rights and our rights are being taken away because we live in a certain state... that's scary.

If anyone in WA State wants to know if their state representative and/or senator voted for this bill, you can see it here on April 13th & 19th:
http://apps.leg.wa.gov/BillInfo/summary.aspx?bill=5340&year=2009

But I would be very hesitant to complain as it could bring a spotlight to the situation when there really isn't one now.

You're right to be upset. I'd contact your local reps, as well as the Governor. You could even contact the Congressperson/Senators to suggest the unconstitutionality of these new laws.

Seattle is 3 hours...minus traffic. Make a day of it and hit Cascade as well.

Take the train and you get off 5 blocks away and don't have to drive.

This makes a really large segment of pipe tobacco simply unavailable to me. I appreciate everyone's suggestions about driving into other states and countries, but come on - it's just pipe tobacco and locally available stuff is ok.

The kicker is, from the point of view of the tobacco industry in WA it's a win situation. I have to go to a local B&M to get pipe tobacco, which only helps them. So the very people who you think would be standing up to the law are actually benefitting from it. This is really p!@#!@ me off. We can't smoke in our smoke shops either, that is just weird.

On the hi-ways here they have signs up with a number for fellow citizens to report car pool violations, and in my local beach park there is a sign encouraging people to dial 911 if they see a dog being brought into the park. Once I had a neighbor call the police on me because my vehicle tags had expired. Most day's I love living here, but today I'm just pi!@#!d

Wasn't there also legislation to annul marriages if children weren't born in the first few years? An odd State for sure.

If I recall correctly, that was primarily a publicity stunt. One of the common arguments against gay marriage is that gay couples can't procreate or that marriage as an institution exists solely to support procreation. Some people took that argument to its extreme to insist that ANY couple that can't or won't procreate shouldn't be allowed to marry.
