dude, for $38? you wind up with three smokers out of that lot, you done good! especially if you don't mind the work. good luck with it, and would LOVE to see some finished, maybe before and after, pix. o)

also, anyone heard of using nail polish on a loose tennon? NOT a good idea! let it cure for 24hr before i dropped it back in, and it still smeared inside the pipe. going to have to remove it with alcohol (slow, but i am NOT using acetone on my briar), then maybe either try super glue, or try to GENTLY heat and spread it.

I actually may get up to 7 smokers outta this lot. Im surprised. One is cracked, and one has a really bad stem. But 5 or 6 may work out nice and my get 7 out of the lot.

Great thread and awesome looking pipes!

Please forgive my ignorance and apologize for the small thread derailing but what qualifies a pipe as an "estate pipe"??
Used. That pretty much sums it up. Used.

I thought the whole idea was pretty disgusting at first. But the more I read and understood, I got interested. A good "estate" pipe is already broken in. Is already a good smoker. Cake is already built up.

Well I dont know. Im learning here. And sharing with you guys as I go.

As with any hobby, proper tools help alot. A friend sent me a tool kit, brand new! It has everything.

Giving the salt treatment to two more bowls now. Will post up pics here shortly.

First thing I do is soak the stem in water and Oxyclean.
Then I reamed the bowls.
A good cleaning with pipe cleaners and Im using pipemasters, clean & cure. Most use everclear. Well I dont drink. Me and everclear, well we had a long history. 'nuff said.
Lots of cleaner and LOTS of pipe cleaners. Both bristled and not. Both tapered and not. Till all my cleaners came out clean.
Then I salt treated my bowls.
Again with the pipe cleaner and pipe cleaners.
Mr Clean magic Eraser to clean all the "oxidation" off the stems. If the stem have bite marks I use emery boards to do some light sanding.
Next will be the buffing wheel with tripoli bar and a muslim wheel.

Cant find my tripoli bar so Im gonna have to order one.

Well thats where im at so far.

How the Carey ‘Magic Inch’ system works

The system has been designed to allow a precise amount of outside air into each puff of smoke. Unique moisture ports then dissipate wetness, tar and nicotine into the 2 ply Papyrate sleeve, protecting the smoker from unwanted materials. The Papyrate itself provides excellent absorbency for dryer smoking and increased durability. Subsequently the Magic Inch chamber releases moisture through evaporation during resting periods between smokes. Neither a filter nor a standard ‘push bit’, a true innovation.

Now the problem. Since i salt treated the bowl, the tenon on the filter is too tight in the mortise of the bowl.

And one the tenon is in the mortise, i cant remove the stem without the stem sliding off the filter, leaving it in the bowl. Have to use pliers to remove from the bowl.

Maybe instead of salting try some sweet pipe type if liquid cleaner. And if your going to do a bunch of this look into a pipe retort and a pipe scrub brush is reusable and worth its weight in gold at. 99 cents.

Very nice bro! Yes I am one of the idiots that used a flame on one of my stems thinking it would correct an issue. BIG mistake! :hanghead:

pipe retort will help you clean alot of the pipes faster and without using as many pipe cleaners.

hey if 10 million rednecks can make meth daily with only a couple of trailers burnt down i think you will do fine.
Now thats funny. Been reading about them. Cant find the glass bulb but other kits are made from pyrex test tubes. Actually simple to build one.

Ok, so I received my first "used" pipe from a bomb, thanks to Utah! So...the stem was a bit oxidized and dirty so I put it in bleach-water but I was kinda afraid, so I took it out. Then I put it in a cup full of OxyClean and after 30 minutes or 1-hour it was cleaner. But it is still oxydized with mouth bite mark. What can I do? I read I could use toothpaste, so it has toothpaste on right now...The stem inside is clean, all pipe cleaners get out CLEAN, but the tenon was REALLY dirty so I used Q-tips with alcohol and it's still a bit dirty...

The bowl on the other hand, is pretty much dirty. The top of the chamber seems to have "cake"? black stuff which can get cleaned with a q-tip and saliva...but heck it is REALLY dirty, 4 Q-tips are not enough. And for the bowl, I am thinking about a salt treatment, maybe tonight. Whatcha guys think?
