maralyn manson's "i put a spell on you", shonen knife on "top of the world" (mostly as it unnerves my wife that i can sing in engrish), and the entire discography of me first and the gimme gimme's. as long as it's LOUD. o)

Gotta change my vote...All Along The Watchtower- Jimi Hendrix
Definitely one of the best.

"I Heard it Through the Grapevine"...3 covers (Gladys Knight & the Pips, Marvin Gaye and Credence Clearwater Revival) all surpass The Miracles original version.

Love many of Johnny Cash's covers, besides the ones mentioned here, I particularly like "Personal Jesus" and "Bridge Over Troubled Waters".

Chris Cornell has some great ones too, he completely changes the feels of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and Dolly Parton (and Whitney Houston's) "I Will Always Love You".

Absolute favorite....right now, I gotta go with Willie Nelson's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

I really like Killswitch Engages' version of Holy Diver by Dio. But I'm not ready to say that it is better than the original. Damn close tho. Damn close.

Many mentioned already, but my thoughts are this:
Any remake Metallica did Pre-Garage Inc. I was not a fan of the Motörhead attempt.
Hallowed be thy Name and The Sentinel - Machine Head
I Put a Spell on You and You're So Vain - Marilyn Manson. He usually puts a nice spin on all his remakes IMO.
Wasted Years - Devildriver
Don't You (Forget About Me) - Life of Agony
Land of Confusion - Disturbed
I Aint Superstitious and These Boots - Megadeth
Saturday Night's Alright (For Fighting) - Nickleback
Cat Scratch Fever and Planet Caravan - Pantera
Symptom of the Universe and Orgasmitron - Sepultura
Zero the Hero - Cannibal Corpse (as shown on Ace Ventura)
Smokin in the Boys Room - Mötley Crüe
Also like Kitty's version of Run Like Hell, but not better than the original of course...
Just to name a few...

when my 70+ year old dad heard "Hurt" by Johnny Cash and it was a remake - he asked me about the original. It's amazing how better Cash's version is than NIN. As for the comment that Sinead O'Connor's remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U" was better I strongly disagree.

My pick - "Black Magic Woman" by Santana (Fleetwood Mac did the original w/ Peter Green)
I could also through out a couple dozen covers that the Grateful Dead did especially in concert. "Sampson & Delilah" or the 20 minute plus versions of various Chuck Berry songs come to mind.

The Cake version of 'I will survive' is pretty good, especially if you like a nice base line.
Billy Idol does a fun rendition of 'LA Woman'...Not that great of a song, but kinda toe-tappy.
I'm sure it's already in the thread, but it takes balls of steel to re-do Otis Redding's 'Hard to handle", but the black Crowes sure nailed it!

Actually most of Billy Idol's hits are remakes LA Woman, Money Money, To Be a Lover and I like them all better than the originals.
