What cover of a song is actually better than the original?

I really can't understand how I am the only person to mention Jeff Buckley doing Hallelujah. That version was far more successful financially than Cohen's, and it's pretty much the only version you ever hear. There are people out there who've only heard Buckley's version, and don't realize it is a cover.

and one that has not been mentioned...The Bangles version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" which was done for the film Less than Zero

I came really close to picking this one as my choice, but the Otis version is excellent in own right - the Crowes remake blew the cobwebs off the song and was a great song that helped put them on the map.
I was thinking the same thing - time for an order to my PO for more small flat boxes, esp. with the holiday season around the corner.
