What cover of a song is actually better than the original?

Dude.... I deserve to be smacked for that one.
Dude....You might want to watch your words around here. Words like smacked, hit, etc.. Could be wrongly construed by some of the trigger happy guys in this place. Just a friendly reminder.
Huh?? Hoshy has been here for a while, bro...He knows how to handle his words.
I realize your post was meant to be helpful, but the word " smack" is hardly offensive.

Here's mine.

Deftones cover of "Simple Man". I really like the Skynyrd version but the Deftones really seem to add a humbleness to the song that gives it more depth for me.

Close second, Johnny Cash's cover of "Rusty Cage". I like the song but I've never been a huge fan of the way Chris Cornell's voice sounds, so the Johnny Cash version is a win for me.

What's yours?[/QUOT

In my opinion Shinedowns version of Simple Man does the job better than any, Totally agree with Cash!

I really can't understand how I am the only person to mention Jeff Buckley doing Hallelujah. That version was far more successful financially than Cohen's, and it's pretty much the only version you ever hear. There are people out there who've only heard Buckley's version, and don't realize it is a cover.

My favorites have already been stated....

Johnny cash version of "Hurt"
Jimmie Hendrix Version of "all along the watchtower"
Gary Jules version of "Mad World" (originally done by Tears for Fears BTW, not Duran Duran)
Cake version of "I will Survive" (also love their version of "War Pigs")

and one that has not been mentioned...The Bangles version of "Hazy Shade of Winter" which was done for the film Less than Zero

I'm sure it's already in the thread, but it takes balls of steel to re-do Otis Redding's 'Hard to handle", but the black Crowes sure nailed it!
I came really close to picking this one as my choice, but the Otis version is excellent in own right - the Crowes remake blew the cobwebs off the song and was a great song that helped put them on the map.

I don't know if this is a better cover or not. You be the judge. But listen to this. ;):)

This is a "MUST" see. These kids are amazing. With a 12 year old singer at that..
