Was watching 60 minutes and they had Dave Grohl on. During the interview they said he is one of the best drummers in music. I know the drummer is sometime an unknown (I only know Travis Barker and Lars) I know we got drummers here so who are some of the best??

Neil Peart on Letterman the exchange between Dave's announcer and the audience is funny at the beginning.

Questlove- dude can do it all
Jaimoe and butch trucks and mark quinones- allman brothers is the best rhythm section I've ever laid ears on.
Peart- though I'm not really a fan I can't deny the talent

And then I drew a blank. Many more I'd mention though

I might be showing my age but modern drummers can't shine the shoes of previous greats like KRUPA, BUDDY RICH, and recently deceased and former drummer of the tonight show ED SHAUGHNESSEY!!! These guys were absolute MONSTERS!!! You tube them and you will see the shit they were doing was unholy!! Don't get me wrong, Peart, Copeland, etc. have their place in the hall of excellent drummers BUT and I stress BUT.. the old school drummers were way more versatile and did a hell of a lot more with a third of amount of drums! IMO Buddy Rich still remains the great of all greats!!

While this isn't one of the best drummers per se, there is a local band in the Dallas area called Spoonfed Tribe. They are a band that uses a lot of drums in their music. Videos are nice and all, but live. Man!!!

Joel's list is pretty comprehensive. I would add:

Carter Beauford
And Marco Minnemann. This guy is insane. A true must watch.

I forgot about Minnemann. Good call.

Doh! I remember seeing Beauford with a rep from WB before they got signed. The A&R guy I was with passed on signing them - what a dope!

I'm still asleep, but how are Elvin Jones, and Philly Jo Jones not on these list? Hell, not even a mention of Kenny Spearman-Clark ( aka "Klook", the inventor of "jazz drumming")?

Aierto, Tony Williams (Fela Kuti's drummer) and Manu Katche are all tight, too...

And to anyone who thinks Gene Krupa is on this list:

1) he stole his style from Cozy Cole.

2) as far as white Jazz drummers go, Buddy Rich smoked the rest of them.
