... But I don't own any and I'm not gonna try explaining to my wife that I need her nail polish lol

True story - about 7 years ago I was teaching a class called "Shooting Portraits on a Budget" and part of it was that I built three sets, each of which cost me less than $40, buying much of it at Walmart.

On one set I used a cheap plastic shower curtain ($3). Another set I used a cheap blue bedsheet ($4). I found those and tossed them into my cart. Next, I wanted to show an old-school method for creating a soft-focus on your subject - stretching black nylons over the end of your lens. I went into the "lingerie" section and just grabbed the first package of the cheapest black pantyhose that they had ($4). Then I wanted to show another method of soft focusing by smearing a very thin layer of Vaseline around the edges of the lens while leaving the center clean. Well, the problem with Vaseline is that it is a petroleum product and I had no intention of putting that stuff anywhere near an expensive lens or camera body. But then I had an awesome thought - use KY jelly because it's water-based and easily cleaned up. So into my cart went a tube of it.

I go to check out and the cashier is just staring at me and, as I look down, I realize what this must look like - a bed sheet, a plastic sheet, a pair of nylons (which, coincidentally, I swear, were "Queen size" and would fit me), and a tube of KY jelly.

Yeah, I just kept my head down, paid for it and got the hell out of there. I'm reasonably certain that, all these years later, my picture is still in their security office!
I don't know how I missed this story until now, but that is some funny sh!t! :rolling:

The eBay seller that I bought the Dr. Grabow from offers this downloadable[Is that a word? LOL] book on pipe restoration.

Did you buy one? Are you posting a don't lol?
No, not yet.
Not to rob the guy from making money but I'm not sure I'd bother spending that much money. Guys like Grrrrr have put together some amazing articles here on BOTL and between this thread and YouTube, you'll have all the info you need. I've gotten pretty good at restorations (at least I like to think so) and other than a couple of YT vids, everything I've learned has been from just a couple of brothers here.

Just my 2¢

understand and that was why I 1/2 jokingly asked if that was a don't :) There is loads of info for free and as Rob said on here from grrrr and what not. I am sure someone took all the information that they found out on the web and pu t it in text to one area and called it a book..... I have to say that in the past while i was working in Low Voltage I jumped on a Ebook that soon after I downloaded it I found that most of the information was taking from tech flyers and wasn't much more then what I had already had with my own paper lol.

Are estate pipes that are sold on SmokingPipes already cleaned? ...And where do you all usually buy your estate pipes? eBay?

Not that I really need another pipe, but it seems lika a fun hobby...

So begins my slope. 2 more on the way.

Grabow royal duke

And one marked straight grain. Kaywoodie?

Nothing fancy but a good place to start learning I think

Pretty decent shape all in all. Very dirty lol. I think I'm going to strip both down to bare briar. Should be fun

Grabow turned out pretty nicely. Didn't strip all the way down but did remove all of the old wax and some of the stain. rubbed with olive oil and waxed with carnauba.

Stem is a little lose but it's a good flake smoker :) going to have to try the beeswax on the tenon
That turned out great!
