So, to recap where we're at:
-Author shape
-Traditional tapered stem- Cumberland
-TNB clench (not sure what that is but sounds good to me)

Question now is stain:

Anybody have examples of what they might like?

More contrast sounds good to me!

The stem won't taper straight to the button. There will be about a quarter inch in front of the button, so those who do can clench, before the taper starts.

a deeper, curtain-style blast with more contrast and a standard stem made of brindle Cumberland and I'm sold
Unfortunately, to get the nice deep blast there's a lot more time involved. TNB says it actually takes longer than finishing a smooth pipe, and that's assuming all the briar will even work for the desired blast.

I dunno? I don't make pipes!
They said that about the really impressive blasts, not all blasts.
I think that some flaws can be hidden by sandblasting (and even more by rusticating) therefore allowing you to sell a pipe that might otherwise not make the cut for a smooth. Right?
I'd guess there are plenty of instances where a well made, well thought out blasted pipe would cost you more than a poorly situated "take what you get" smooth pipe would. Maybe?
Good questions!
I think maybe it was more of a comment to the difficulty that might come trying to blast 24 pipes all to look like this:

Can I first the trim rings? I like them a bunch.

Seconded, a dark stain with a light contrast ring (not too bulbous, like @CaptainRon mentioned) and I'm still partial to a saddle bit. But if it ends up tapered maybe I'll convince that ginger who shares a name with me to make a saddle bit as well

He probably will but he will have to lick it first. Or maybe that's just my pipes.

thirded. propose a smooth trim ring in line with the pipe shank and the stem.
