Honestly I try and read as many reviews from the guys here. While I don't agree with the opinions always, I do appreciate what they do for this community.

Otherwise I got really big into watching video reviews as I found them to be easier to digest while actually smoking a cigar

Love reading the Katman's reviews, but my palate isn't nearly as refined as his.

For video reviews I like Bryan Glenn from Cigarobsession. He and I have different tastes but similar palates.

I don't get any of the flavors these reviewers get. Part of me thinks they're making this shit up. Almond butter? Really? All good though. To each their own. I've been smoking 10+ years now and know what I like. Don't really put too much into trying to taste buttered toast and blackberries when I smoke. I just smoke.

Some of the shit katman picks up is ridiculous. I would say his palate is that extreme but to each their own. But usually if he recommends a cigar I'll try it and they're usually good.

I've noticed over time with both cigar and whiskey reviewers that there seems to be a sort of arms race among some of them to find new descriptive terms. With some of them its down right comical. :D

A lot of people have an issue with descriptive terms. I don't know why. The whole point of reviews is to try and describe the cigar's flavor. If your palate can taste sensations that you can describe by comparing them to flavors others will be familiar with, why wouldn't you?

As with any description, you could stick to objective facts "it is burning, there is smoke, it tastes like tobacco" or you can get more descriptive. I find that while I may not be able to taste all, or sometimes even most, of the flavors being described, they do help round out the picture of the experience for me.

As to a favorite reviewer, I don't have one. I do really like Blind Man's Puff for the neutral, unbiased way we review cigars, and because you get a panel of experiences with each review. I tend to just google reviews by anyone and everyone if I'm looking at a particular stick, then compile a general consensus in my head of what they're all saying. I find that in doing that, I get a pretty reliable idea of the flavor profile and quality of the cigar, regardless of what any one reviewer is saying.

Well, here's the thing; I'm sort of calling BS on some of them. Not that it matters really.

Lastly: Do I think anyone can taste "slate?" No.
That's an example I find humorous and would call "pulling it out of your arse." :ROFLMAO:
Now you've actually said it, and I'm calling BS on the thought process that says "If I can't taste it, the other guy is making it up."
