Haven't dropped one with a montac g5 myself, but I have two friends that have, and having seen then in person they are fucking mean and razor sharp. Dont own a bow currently, have a couple times throughout life, always had to sell then for some reason or another. Maybe get back into it someday
2 friends have them and swear by them. And a few others have mechanicals.

Used Montecs a ton in the past. They work well but I do suggest getting a good sharpening stone for them. They are sharper enough but not enough for me. can definitely be a lot sharper.

They checked it all out and starting me at 50lbs. As per their recommendation. I’m worried about my banged up rotator cuff. Time will tell on that though. I accidentally like an idiot picked the bow up and made the costly mistake of dry firing. But they said the strings were shot anyway and needed to be replaced. Whoever had the bow before me I guess didn’t take proper care of it?

I’ll be going back soon. Monday nights they do an “archery 101” class and go through every bit and piece of a bow. Plus some range time with an experienced hunter/archer who works at the shop. And ny wife wants to try this out. I can’t say no for that either!

50 is fine for anything you'll hunt in the lower 48. Arrow placement and a good cut on contact broad head. Moctecs arent bad but if you like the design, I'd look at the VPA heads. Montecs are MIM construction, VPA is more less the same head design but machined from high carbon steel.

Good to know, I’ll definitely check them out. Thanks!

I bowhunt. Season opens September 15 in MO, but I dont usually consider going til the last week of October. Been busy this year, and am hoping to get out tomorrow for the 1st time. Friday too.

Rifle season starts Saturday, but that will be all about my daughter. If she tags early, might take my 5 yr old son on his first deer hunt, watching, not shooting.

Good luck to you and your kids! Looks to be a cold morning on Saturday.

I use to bow hunt before we had a kid. Now I don't get to hunt as much so I stick to rifle hunting to maximize my chances of success. Most of my spots have visibility well beyond bow range. I do enjoy shooting my bow so I shoot in the backyard, I just don't take it to the woods anymore. Plus, bow hunting season in Georgia is HOT.

I was eyeballing the Montec G5’s? A buddy said they’re awesome.
I used to hunt with G5's. They are very good, rugged broadheads..

My problem with them is they dont come razor sharp out of the package, and the steel is very hard which makes them more difficult to sharpen than other options.. so I stopped using them last season and moved on to stingers..

That said, I took a 400 lb blue wildebeest with a G5 Montec in South Africa in 2017.. They will certainly get the job done...

Good to know! Here in “NO” York, I believe all mechanical broadheads are illegal. And I think trying to ban crossbows too or used only during special firearms late season in January here on Long Island. This state is a shit show.

I've got some rage mechanicals that I picked up last year when midwayusa put them on clearance.. but I havent ever shot them.. I know a lot of guys rave about the superiority of mechanicals (better accuracy, bigger wound channels, etc).. but I dont shoot much past about 30 yards and dont have a problem keeping 3" groups at that distance.. so accuracy isnt really an issue.. and I prefer reliability over potential wound channel.. so I have stuck with fixed BH's for the most part...

The stingers come razor sharp out of the package and are very easy to keep sharp.. but.. they arent as durable as a Montec.. hit a shoulder bone square with a stinger and you will likely penetrate straight through and into the vitals.. but there is also a pretty good chance you will damage the broadhead beyond repair with that shot as well.... whereas with a G5 youre likely going to crash through the shoulder and hit vitals (assuming you could get it sharp enough prior to using it) and worst case scenario is it is going to come out dull and need to be resharpened before you can use it again..

On the wildebeest referenced above sharpness was an issue and that animal was the primary reason I switched (even though the BH did do its job and ultimately dropped the animal)..

I took a couple of practice shots just before going out that morning.. which dulled the BH (1 shot into a practice target shouldnt have had that much impact.. but it did.. I only fired 3x arrows, 1 time each, to make sure my sights were on and everything with the bow was still ok after traveling 10,000+ miles to the hunt location).. so when I launched on the wildebeest (63lb draw at 18 yards..) what should have easily been a pass through shot resulted in the arrow only penetrating about 7" and just barely reaching vitals..

As soon as he was hit the bastard took off at a lightning fast pace and literally didnt stop running for miles.. we (me, the guide/PH, and the tracker) tracked him for 5 hours.. and then lost him..

Thankfully we recovered him the next day.. at some point in the night he went to a watering hole and finally died.. and was found the next morning by another hunter that was hunting over the watering hole..

Several lessons learned on that hunt.. most of them negative..
